We are currently searching for a Clinical Laboratory Scientist to provide support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is a full-time, on-site opportunity based in Bethesda, MD.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct diagnostic testing on Chemistry, Hematology, and Microbiology specimens, ensuring accurate analytical processing, precise reporting, and meticulous record-keeping of all patient results.
  • Assess and verify the suitability, identification, and overall integrity of incoming clinical specimens, executing proper processing techniques prior to analysis.
  • Collaborate closely with laboratory staff to execute moderate-to-high complexity testing protocols and streamline specimen processing.
  • Validate control data prior to releasing patient results to guarantee clinical accuracy and strict quality standards.
  • Manage and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and reagents, initiating corrective actions promptly to ensure continuous operational quality.
  • Adhere to established protocols and laboratory policies whenever testing systems deviate from acceptable performance ranges.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues affecting testing and reporting; document all corrective measures and escalate issues to appropriate staff when necessary.
  • Consult and communicate with medical personnel regarding specimen collection protocols, actively resolving any documentation or specimen integrity issues.
  • Execute and log all quality control measures, instrument calibrations, and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Perform proficiency testing in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Document and communicate instances of instrument downtime, corrective actions, and quality control issues.
  • Prioritize and structure daily laboratory tasks to align with patient needs and operational demands.
  • Monitor and audit reagent and supply inventories to prevent shortages and maintain optimal stock levels.
  • Collaborate to evaluate new techniques, perform comparative studies, and determine new guidelines.
  • Uphold regulatory standards by actively participating in inspection preparations and maintaining compliance with all accrediting agencies.

Additional Opportunity (Based on Program Needs):

  • May support laboratory operations for the NIH Clinical Center Special Clinical Studies Unit (SCSU), which includes environments involving patients exposed to communicable diseases outside standard care conditions.
  • May perform clinical laboratory testing across Hematology, Chemistry, and Microbiology under enhanced BSL-2 safety protocols.
  • May participate in training and maintain competency requirements to support SCSU laboratory operations, as applicable.
  • May handle and ship biohazardous specimens in accordance with established safety and regulatory guidelines.
  • If selected to support SCSU coverage, all required training will be provided.


What You Will Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of TWO (2) years of experience working in a clinical hospital laboratory.
  • Physical capability to lift and move equipment or supplies weighing 10 to 30 pounds.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and hand-eye coordination for precision laboratory work.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a small team and demonstrate flexibility in providing coverage when needed.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, with fluency in both written and spoken English.
  • Superior analytical, organizational, and time-management capabilities in high-pressure environments.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD “public trust”; candidates must receive approved adjudication prior to onboarding with Guidehouse. Candidates with an active public trust or suitability are preferred.
  • Full availability and willingness to work the 3rd (overnight) shift. Tour of duty will include rotating holidays and potential for weekend and on-call shifts.


What Would Be Nice To Have:

  • Preferred fields of study: Life Science, Medical Technology, or a related discipline.
  • ASCP (or equivalent) certification, strongly preferred.
  • Proven Generalist experience spanning clinical Chemistry, Hematology, and Microbiology preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Hematology is highly desired.

The annual salary range for this position is $65,000.00-$108,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
