The Role
As a Mainframe Specialist at Kyndryl, you will play a critical role in managing, supporting, and optimizing enterprise mainframe environments, ensuring high availability, performance, security, and operational stability of mission-critical systems.
This position brings together expertise across platform engineering, systems administration, network, and automation, working with technologies such as IBM Z (z/OS, z/VM, Linux on Z), Tandem, and Unisys. You will be responsible for maintaining reliable system operations, secure connectivity, and efficient automated processes that support core business functions.
You will collaborate with global and cross-functional teams to monitor environments, resolve incidents, implement enhancements, and drive continuous improvement initiatives aligned with enterprise and compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure availability, performance, and stability of mainframe environments through proactive monitoring.
- Administer and optimize z/OS, z/VM, and Linux on Z systems in enterprise environments.
- Monitor and maintain network connectivity and latency, including support for VTAM and mainframe network protocols.
- Support and enhance automation processes, including scripting and system workflows.
- Plan, schedule, and execute batch processing operations for business-critical workloads.
- Perform incident response, root cause analysis (RCA), and problem resolution for system, network, and automation issues.
- Manage patching cycles, system updates, and compliance activities, ensuring minimal disruption.
- Perform performance and capacity analysis (e.g., SMF/RMF) and recommend optimizations.
- Utilize tools such as TSO/ISPF, JCL, JES2/3, SDSF, and monitoring solutions (e.g., OMEGAMON, BMC, CA OPS/MVS).
- Support mainframe console operations and system management activities.
- Ensure security and compliance standards, including RACF basics and audit readiness.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement changes, upgrades, and best practices (ITIL).
- Maintain accurate technical documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures.
Who You Are
Required Skills & Experience
- 3–5+ years (or more) of experience in enterprise mainframe environments (systems, platform, network, or automation).
- Strong hands-on experience with z/OS, z/VM, and/or Linux on Z.
- Knowledge of mainframe network protocols (e.g., VTAM) and connectivity concepts.
- Experience with automation tools, scripting (REXX, JCL, Shell), and batch processing.
- Proficiency in mainframe monitoring, incident management, and system operations.
- Experience with mainframe management tools for troubleshooting and performance analysis.
- Familiarity with patch management, compliance processes, and security principles.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of ITIL processes (incident, change, and problem management).
- Intermediate English proficiency for documentation and global collaboration.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Certifications such as IBM Z or ITIL Foundation.
- Experience in large-scale, regulated, or audit-driven environments.
- Knowledge of RACF, system security, and compliance frameworks.
- Experience with monitoring and automation tools (OMEGAMON, BMC MainView, CA OPS/MVS).
- Strong experience in root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across global teams.
- Experience supporting end-to-end infrastructure (hardware, OS, network, middleware).
