Job Role: QA Specialist / Lead

Compensation range: $2,000 AUD - $3,500 AUD / Monthly

Engagement type: Independent Contractor Agreement

Work Schedule: This role is expected to align with the AU business hours (approx. 9 AM - 5 PM, Monday to Friday) for collaboration, but as a contractor, you’ll have flexibility in how you manage your time.

Who The Client Is: Our client is an Australian software company that develops customer engagement and loyalty technology for the hospitality and entertainment sector. Their platform combines mobile applications, web-based systems, data analytics, and marketing automation to help businesses deliver personalized customer experiences, improve engagement, and make data-driven decisions. With an established presence in Australia and growing international operations, they're focused on building reliable, high-quality software that supports thousands of users across multiple digital platforms.

Role Overview: We are seeking an experienced QA Specialist to ensure the quality, stability, and reliability of our web and mobile applications.

This role will be responsible for designing and executing manual test plans, identifying defects, validating new functionality, and ensuring high-quality releases across our software platforms. You'll also contribute to improving our testing processes and expanding our automated testing capability over time.

Initially, the successful candidate will focus on testing our iOS and Android applications, with the opportunity to support our future migration to a Kotlin-based mobile platform. Experience testing mobile applications across multiple devices, operating systems, and release environments will be highly regarded.

This is not a software development role. We're looking for someone who takes ownership of software quality, thinks beyond simply finding bugs, and enjoys identifying issues before they reach our customers.

Key Responsibilities: 

Functional Testing

  • Develop and execute comprehensive test plans and test cases.
  • Perform functional, regression, integration and user acceptance testing across web and mobile applications.
  • Validate new and changed features against requirements, specifications and intended user outcomes prior to release.
  • Verify bug fixes before production deployment.
  • Identify, document and prioritise software defects.
  • Maintain testing documentation and quality standards.

Mobile Application Testing

Current Platforms

  • Test native iOS applications.
  • Test native Android applications.
  • Validate application functionality across multiple devices and OS versions.
  • Test offline functionality and background behaviour.
  • Validate push notifications and permissions.
  • Perform device orientation and usability testing.
  • Support beta testing through TestFlight.

Future Platforms

As our products transition to Kotlin, the QA Specialist will progressively support testing of Kotlin-based Android applications.

Preferred experience includes:

  • Basic understanding of Kotlin syntax and programming concepts.
  • Ability to read Kotlin source code to assist with defect investigation.
  • Experience using Android Studio for debugging.
  • Experience reviewing logs, stack traces, and exceptions.
  • Exposure to mobile debugging tools and workflows is highly regarded.

Release Validation

  • Verify production readiness before releases.
  • Validate fixes following deployments.
  • Assist with release sign-off.
  • Ensure defects are appropriately documented and retested.

Documentation

  • Create detailed test and bug reports.
  • Maintain testing documentation.
  • Develop reusable regression test suites.
  • Document testing procedures and outcomes.
  • Produce release-readiness summaries that give the team confidence to ship (including test plans, coverage, results, known issues, and sign-off).

Process Improvement

  • Improve QA workflows and testing processes 
  • Establish repeatable testing standards 
  • Contribute to release processes and quality metrics

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of hands-on experience in software quality assurance (QA), including manual testing of web and mobile applications.
  • Strong experience with API testing using Postman or similar tools.
  • Proficiency with Jira, test case management, bug reporting, and defect tracking.
  • Solid understanding of software testing methodologies, test planning, test execution, and quality assurance best practices.
  • Experience building or maintaining automated test suites.
  • Willingness to learn CI/CD, release engineering, and deployment tooling.
  • Ability to communicate technical issues clearly.

Preferred Skills:

  • Automated testing frameworks
  • SQL/database testing
  • CI/CD environments
  • Agile development environments
  • Experience with TestFlight.
  • Familiarity with the Apple App Store release process and Google Play Console.
  • Experience installing and testing APK/AAB builds.
  • Exposure to Android Studio, Kotlin, mobile debugging, and crash log analysis.

Build, CI/CD & Release Engineering (Growth Area)

  • While this isn't a core requirement from day one, you'll have opportunities to expand your skills by supporting our build and release processes, including:
    • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and release automation.
    • Docker and Kubernetes.
    • Windows and Linux build environments.
    • GitHub Actions and Bitbucket Pipelines.
    • Integrating automated testing into CI/CD workflows.

Test Planning & Automation

    • Design, maintain, and expand automated testing frameworks to improve test coverage.
    • Convert manual and regression test cases into reliable, repeatable automated suites.
    • Recommend where automation delivers the most value and reduces manual effort.

Bonus

    • Experience with, or willingness to learn, mobile test automation tools such as Appium and UI Automator.
