Chief Building Engineer – JLL

What this job involves:

JLL is seeking an experienced Chief Building Engineer to oversee the comprehensive operation, maintenance, and repair of all critical building systems and equipment. This role is essential to ensuring optimal performance, safety, and reliability of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and life safety systems across our facility. The Chief Building Engineer will be responsible for maintaining building automation systems, managing equipment room standards, controlling parts inventory, and supporting all life safety testing protocols. This position requires a highly skilled professional who can work independently, troubleshoot complex systems, and maintain the highest standards of building operations while ensuring compliance with all applicable codes and regulations.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Operate, maintain, and repair all boilers, heaters, pumps, valves, and steam/hot water distribution systems
  • Manage refrigeration systems including compressors, condensers, evaporators, and air conditioning systems in their entirety, utilizing approved recovery equipment to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Service and maintain air compressors, distribution lines, air dryers, and filtering systems
  • Oversee natural and manufactured gas distribution systems, including all valves and control devices
  • Maintain water systems including filters, softeners, expansion tanks, pumps, sprinkler systems, and all plumbing fixtures
  • Perform electrical/control systems work including circuit diagnostics, tracing, troubleshooting, and repair of motor controls and variable frequency drives (VFDs)
  • Operate and maintain building automation systems for HVAC, lighting, and other controlled systems, including consoles, data gathering panels, and remote sensors
  • Service fuel oil systems including all piping, pumps, valves, strainers, filters, and controls
  • Maintain sanitary sewer systems, sump pumps, grease traps, and clear blockages in fixtures and lines on both as-needed and preventative basis
  • Service trash/recycling/composting/baling compactors, including electrical and hydraulic components
  • Maintain and repair all kitchen equipment (excluding tenant-owned equipment)
  • Operate, maintain, and repair all life safety equipment and support testing protocols
  • Manage inventory control for parts and materials required for building system maintenance
  • Maintain equipment rooms to the highest physical condition and appearance standards
  • Perform maintenance on elevators, lifts, escalators, and hoist ways where properly licensed and not covered by specialized contractors

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in building engineering, facilities maintenance, or directly related field
  • Valid stationary engineer license or applicable trade certifications as required by local jurisdiction
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification (required for refrigeration work)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems
  • Demonstrated ability to operate, maintain, and repair all building systems outlined in job responsibilities
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills including experience with motor controls and VFDs
  • Proficiency with building automation systems and control platforms
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and schematics
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional trade certifications (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) beyond minimum requirements
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and building codes
  • Previous experience in commercial real estate or large-scale facility management
  • Familiarity with life safety systems testing and compliance protocols
  • Experience with inventory management and procurement processes

Salary/Comp:

$72.93 per hour

This position does not provide visa sponsorship. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Estimated compensation for this position:

7,293.00 – 72.93 USD per year

This range is an estimate and actual compensation may differ. Final compensation packages are determined by various considerations including but not limited to candidate qualifications, location, market conditions, and internal considerations.
