A Day in the Life
As a Senior EHS&S Specialist, you will play a vital role in deploying and embedding Environmental, Health, Safety & Sustainability (EHS&S) policies and procedures in line with Dutch regulations and Medtronic’s global standards. You will perform workplace and specific risk assessments — covering areas such as ergonomics, warehouse safety, manual handling and fire protection-. You will be delivering expert EHS&S support to a diverse workforce and will be reporting directly to the Senior EHS Manager.In this dynamic position, you will focus mainly on the European Operations Center campus in Heerlen, with 2 distribution centers and a large office facility. The Senior EHS&S Specialist is responsible for leading and supporting environmental, health, and safety programs to help ensure regulatory compliance, reduce risk, prevent injuries, and promote a strong safety culture. This role partners closely with site leadership, operations, facilities, quality, human resources, and employees to implement EHS strategies, monitor performance, investigate incidents, and drive continuous improvement across the operations.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:
- Lead the daily implementation and maintenance of EHS&S programs, policies, procedures, and management system requirements across assigned site(s).
- Drive risk reduction initiatives in areas such as ergonomics, manual handling, warehouse safety, biohazards, emergency preparedness, and preventive medical processes.
- Partner with operations and site leadership to embed EHS&S standards into everyday work practices, processes, and employee behaviors.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through coaching, employee engagement, leadership visibility, and clear communication.
- Ensure compliance with corporate standards and all applicable environmental, health, safety, and sustainability regulations.
- Conduct audits, inspections, risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective actions to identify hazards and strengthen controls.
- Support training, emergency readiness, environmental compliance, sustainability activities, performance tracking, and site/project risk evaluations, while serving as Prevention Advisor for assigned Dutch Medtronic site(s).
Required Knowledge and Experience/Must have:
- A degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environment, Sustainability, Engineering, Science, or possess a relevant qualification such as a NEBOSH Certificate, EHS accreditation.
- Strong working knowledge of EHS&S and Risk Management legislation and principles, with experience in local and/or regional EHS&S regulatory compliance, as well as developing, implementing, and managing EHS&S programs.
- Minimum of 5 years of previous EHS&S and Prevention Advisor experience
- Fluency in both Dutch and English.
- At least 2 years’ experience delivering trainings and presentations, working on projects, or developing project management skills. Candidates must also be highly computer literate, with strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Must be organized, self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team, take initiative, prioritize workload effectively, adapt to a constantly changing environment, and demonstrate an outgoing, friendly, and ‘Can Do’ attitude.
Health & Safety experience within the medical device industry and the logistics or distribution environment would be an advantage for this role. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a customer-focused attitude and be both diplomatic and assertive, with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the organisation. A positive and professional approach is essential, along with flexibility, strong analytical skills, and a proven ability to solve problems.
