Building Engineer Role and Responsibilities
A building engineer, also known as a maintenance engineer or facilities engineer, plays a critical role in maintaining the functionality, efficiency, and safety of facilities. They are responsible for performing a wide range of maintenance tasks to ensure that the building's systems and infrastructure are operating smoothly.
Key Responsibilities:
- Routine Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs of building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, lighting, and fire protection systems, to ensure their efficient operation.
- Troubleshooting and Repairs: Identify, diagnose, and resolve building system issues, equipment malfunctions, and structural problems in a timely manner. This may involve repairing or replacing faulty components, wiring, pipes, or other building elements.
- General Repairs: Handle minor repairs and maintenance tasks such as fixing broken doors or windows, painting walls, replacing light bulbs, and repairing or replacing floor tiles.
- Safety and Compliance: Ensure that the building adheres to safety regulations and standards. Regularly inspect and maintain fire safety equipment, emergency systems, and exit signage. Report any safety concerns or potential hazards to management.
- Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and operate various equipment and tools necessary for building maintenance tasks. This includes ensuring proper storage, cleaning, and maintenance of tools and equipment.
- Vendor Coordination: Collaborate with external vendors, contractors, and suppliers to schedule repairs, maintenance services, and inspections. Act as a liaison between the building management and external service providers for smooth coordination and effective operations.
- Recordkeeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all maintenance activities, including repairs performed, parts used, and maintenance schedules. Generate reports on maintenance issues, equipment condition, and recommendations for improvement.
- Emergency Response: Respond promptly to emergency maintenance situations, such as plumbing leaks, power outages, or building security issues. Take appropriate actions to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of the occupants.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; vocational or technical training in a relevant field is preferred.
- Proven experience as a building engineer or similar role.
- Familiarity with building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
- Basic knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) is a plus.
- Good communication and customer service skills.
- Physical stamina and ability to handle heavy lifting and work at heights if required.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and practices.

Estimated compensation for this position:
132,537.00 – 132,537.00 USD per yearThis range is an estimate and actual compensation may differ. Final compensation packages are determined by various considerations including but not limited to candidate qualifications, location, market conditions, and internal considerations.
