Job Purpose
This role sits within the Professional Services (PS) AppDev team, which designs, builds and maintains custom Java plugins and workflow extensions that integrate with Gresham's Control reconciliation platform. These client-specific solutions augment the core product to meet individual client requirements and are developed and owned entirely within PS, outside of the core product engineering team. The role is based in Bangalore and operates on a hybrid basis, with typically three days per week in the office.
The Java Application Developer is primarily responsible for the ongoing support and maintenance of solutions built by the AppDev team, working closely with Customer Success to investigate, diagnose and resolve client issues in a timely and professional manner. A thorough understanding of existing platform architectures and a disciplined approach to solution quality, security and stability are fundamental to the role.
Where client needs require it, the Application Developer also contributes to the design and delivery of new plugins and solutions, managing the development lifecycle from requirements gathering through to deployment. Across both support and development activities, consistent commitment to standards, rigorous testing and clear documentation ensures that all solutions remain robust, adaptable and fit for purpose.
Job Responsibilities
At Gresham, we are committed to building a diverse and inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We actively encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds and are dedicated to providing a workplace where everyone feels valued, respected and supported.
We make employment decisions based on merit, skills and potential, and do not discriminate based on any protected characteristic. We are also committed to making reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process and employment lifecycle.

Job Responsibilities
- Maintain and support existing AppDev solutions across their lifecycle, ensuring they continue to perform reliably, meet client requirements and remain aligned with current security and quality standards.
- Serve as a primary technical contact for Customer Success teams, resolving support tickets, troubleshooting client issues through log analysis, sharing knowledge on complex plugin implementations and providing technical training.
- Manage client enhancement requests with professionalism and rigour, gathering complete requirements and delivering high-quality solutions that are built for long-term maintainability and security.
- Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of relevant Gresham software architectures to enable effective diagnosis and resolution of issues, and to ensure that any new solutions integrate seamlessly with existing systems.
- Apply considered judgement around performance, database interaction and scalability when extending or building upon existing solutions, ensuring changes do not introduce regressions or degrade system behaviour.
- Adhere to application development standards by keeping pull requests concise and focused, following agreed naming conventions, producing clear and thorough documentation and writing code that is built to scale.
- Ensure that all bug fixes, enhancements and new implementations are supported by comprehensive test coverage that validates correct behaviour and prevents regression against defined requirements.
- Apply working knowledge of the AppDev release process, including CircleCI pipelines, security scanning tools and release workflows, to deliver consistent, reliable and compliant deployments.
- Exercise sound judgement in release planning, upholding delivery and quality standards and communicating clearly when proposed timelines or scope changes carry quality or security risks.
- Manage workload and priorities effectively to consistently meet agreed deadlines while maintaining a high standard of output and a strong focus on client satisfaction.
- Provide accurate effort estimates for assigned work and proactively communicate progress updates to project managers and relevant stakeholders throughout the delivery lifecycle.
- Contribute to the maintenance and improvement of shared solution repositories, including plugin libraries and configuration templates, to promote knowledge sharing and reuse across the AppDev team.
- Strong SQL skills, including writing and optimising complex queries and confidently interrogating and analysing large datasets to identify, explain and resolve data discrepancies within complex, multi-system environments.
- Demonstrable client-facing or technical support experience, combined with strong analytical and problem-solving skills: the ability to diagnose issues, troubleshoot through log and data analysis, and independently resolve complex technical problems directly with clients.
- Solid Java development ability, sufficient to maintain, enhance and, where needed, build plugins and workflow extensions, underpinned by a sound grasp of object-oriented programming principles and modern development practices.
- Around 3 to 5 years of relevant experience is expected, though deep backend specialism matters less than the ability to apply Java effectively in a support and enhancement context.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with experience working collaboratively alongside Customer Success and Professional Services teams; the role involves regular direct engagement with clients and project managers.
- Solid understanding of database design and interaction, with the ability to design for performance and scalability within complex data environments.
- Confident use of Git for source control, including branching strategies (such as feature branching and Gitflow), pull request workflows, code review processes and maintaining a clean, well-structured commit history in a collaborative team environment.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment tooling, ideally including CircleCI or a comparable platform.
- Practical experience working in AWS cloud environments, with familiarity with core services relevant to application deployment and operation.
- Demonstrable commitment to code quality, including experience with peer code review, test-first development approaches and clear technical documentation.
- Ability to work effectively within a team that operates autonomously from the core product engineering group, consuming platform APIs and release processes whilst managing an independent solution lifecycle.
- Experience working within financial services or fintech environments, with an understanding of the regulatory and compliance considerations relevant to financial data systems.
- Familiarity with enterprise data management platforms, reconciliation systems or similar financial technology products.
- Experience applying secure software development practices across the full development lifecycle, including threat modelling, dependency management and secure code review.
- Exposure to plugin development frameworks or extensible software architectures, particularly within enterprise application environments.
- Familiarity with common object-oriented design patterns — such as Strategy, Factory, Observer and Decorator — and an understanding of when and how to apply them in the context of extensible, maintainable Java development.
