Job Description

As part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team, you’ll discover meaningful work that makes a positive impact on a global scale. Join our colleagues in bringing our Mission to life every single day to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges, like protecting the environment, making sure our food is safe or helping find cures for cancer.

DESCRIPTION:

Join our Experience Design Center (XDC) and help shape the next generation of scientific instruments through world-class product experience. As the Manager, Product Experience Design, you will help grow a multidisciplinary team of Industrial Designers and Mechanical Engineers, driving the development of innovative physical products that balance customer needs, technical excellence, manufacturability, sustainability, and Thermo Fisher Scientific's brand identity.

In this role, you will provide both people leadership and technical direction, fostering a collaborative, high-performing team while partnering closely with User Experience Research, User Experience Design, Product Management, R&D, Operations, Marketing, and Manufacturing. You will ensure customer workflows and user insights are translated into intuitive, differentiated product experiences that are scalable for global manufacturing and aligned with our corporate design system.

You will oversee product development from early opportunity assessment and concept generation through engineering development, validation, and commercialization. Beyond delivering successful products, you will establish design strategy, mentor and develop talent, strengthen cross-functional partnerships, and continuously improve the processes and standards that enable XDC to deliver consistent, high-quality experiences across Thermo Fisher's portfolio.

As a leader within XDC, you will champion human-centered design, engineering rigor, and design excellence while cultivating an environment of innovation, accountability, and continuous learning. Your success will be measured not only by the products your team delivers, but by the growth of your people, the strength of your partnerships, and the lasting impact of the experiences you create for scientists around the world.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or a related discipline; advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in industrial design, product development, mechanical engineering, or a related field, including 2+ years of people leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated success leading multidisciplinary teams of Industrial Designers and Mechanical Engineers through the full product development lifecycle.
  • Strong understanding of human-centered design principles and the ability to translate customer workflows into intuitive, manufacturable product experiences.
  • Proven experience leading complex electro-mechanical product development programs from concept through commercialization.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes, including injection molding, sheet metal, machining, die casting, additive manufacturing, and high-volume assembly.
  • Experience partnering with Product Management, R&D, Operations, Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain to successfully deliver New Product Introductions (NPIs).
  • Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), cost optimization, and global product development practices.
  • Proficiency with industrial design and engineering tools, including SolidWorks, Creo, Rhino, KeyShot, Adobe Creative Suite, and product visualization software.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining product experience standards, design systems, or brand identity across a portfolio of products.
  • Proven ability to develop talent through coaching, mentoring, performance management, and career development planning.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills with experience influencing technical, commercial, and executive audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance customer needs, business objectives, technical constraints, and organizational priorities while making sound, data-informed decisions.
  • Strong project and resource management skills, with experience prioritizing work across multiple concurrent programs and geographically distributed teams.
  • Passion for innovation, continuous improvement, and fostering an inclusive, collaborative culture that inspires high performance.
