Right now, we are seeking a bright and energised Minor Vessel Sustainment Engineer.

The Minor Vessel Capability Life Cycle Manager (MV CLCM) program have an exciting opportunity available for a Minor Vessel Sustainment Engineer. As a Minor Vessel (MV) Sustainment Engineer based in Darwin, you will work alongside Defence stakeholders to support fleet sustainment activities for Offshore Patrol Vessels and evolved Cape Class Patrol Boats.

Your responsibilities will include stakeholder engagement, assisting with Problem Identification Reports (PIRs), conducting engineering assessments, supporting the resolution of Urgent Defects (URDEFs), and contributing to the development of technical risk assessments.

This role also provides an excellent opportunity to learn, share knowledge, and further develop your understanding of Defence engineering methodologies, processes, and governance frameworks. You will be supported by the Engineering Manager and the broader Minor Vessel Capability Life-Cycle Management (CLCM) team, who are committed to mentoring and professional development. Working as part of a collaborative and supportive team, you will help meet the needs of our customer, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The role involves regular engagement with colleagues, Australian Defence Force personnel, capability partners, subcontractors, and suppliers to support the delivery of sustainment outcomes.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as the technical interface between the customer, management, and the implementation team.
  • Proactively engage and communicate with ship's staff, SPO, and ACE stakeholders regarding vessel issues, defects, and engineering matters.
  • Review, analyse, and report on engineering change proposals, including deviations and waivers.
  • Develop Technical Instruction documentation and support minor engineering changes, ensuring compliance with quality, safety, and engineering requirements.
  • Oversee shipboard technical assurance activities, including testing, trials, commissioning, and sea trials.
  • Perform technical risk assessments and implement risk mitigation strategies in accordance with the Defence Seaworthiness Management System and the Navy Safety Management System.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to Site Supervisors, Project Managers, and other project personnel to support project delivery outcomes.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to maintain and enhance Raytheon Australia's reputation as a trusted partner in delivering systems integration, engineering, and mission support solutions.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical, Electrical, Structural, or a related engineering discipline, with professional development and experience sufficient to attain Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status with Engineers Australia in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • A minimum of five (5) years' relevant engineering experience for candidates holding a recognised university degree.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting engineering investigations, technical analyses, and preparing engineering reports.
  • Experience working on complex engineering projects, preferably within the Defence or maritime sectors, supporting either acquisition or sustainment programs.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications, prepare technical documentation, and apply a high level of attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with clients and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience undertaking engineering integration activities and applying Systems Engineering principles, including requirements development, engineering design, design integration, verification, and validation.
  • Experience developing, reviewing, and maintaining engineering documentation, including technical drawings, CAD models, work instructions, test procedures, and engineering reports.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, statutory regulations, classification society rule sets, and engineering governance frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, exercising initiative, sound judgement, critical thinking, and effective decision-making skills.
  • Proven ability to achieve results and manage competing priorities in a dynamic and high-pressure environment.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage, prioritise, and complete multiple tasks concurrently while meeting deadlines.
  • This position may require availability to travel when required.
