Senior Advanced R&D Engineer/Scientist
The LNG Technology & Products team delivers competitive LNG technology solutions, develops new products, and improves existing designs and processes. The incumbent is responsible for leading complex research and technology development programs, defining technical strategy, designing and developing process cycles, designing experiments, analyzing results, and translating learnings into improved heat exchanger designs, engineering methods, and commercial offerings.
This is a senior individual contributor research process engineering role with a focus on process cycle and new technology development for the LNG industry. The role requires a creative and innovative approach, strong chemical engineering fundamentals, and the ability to influence across R&D, product management, process engineering, commercial, and operations teams. Ideally, the candidate will have deep experience designing and optimizing process cycles using simulation tools, along with LNG production, liquefaction, gas separation, cryogenic equipment, and heat exchanger technology experience. The candidate will be expected to solve complex and ambiguous technical problems involving two-phase fluid flow, gas separation, heat transfer, thermodynamics, heat exchanger design, and cryogenic equipment performance. This position involves up to 10% travel to domestic and global locations.
- Define LNG technology needs and multi-year development priorities by working effectively with the broader LNG organization, customers, product owners, commercial teams, and engineering stakeholders.
- Lead complex Technology NPD (New Product Development) projects through the stage-gated development process, including technical scope definition, risk assessment, milestone planning, execution, and stakeholder communication.
- Serve as a senior technical authority for LNG process cycle development, cryogenic process technology, heat exchanger performance, and related modeling methods.
- Design, develop, and mature novel process cycles, equipment concepts, and technology solutions that improve LNG business competitiveness, efficiency, reliability, safety, and sustainability.
- Define, develop, and oversee testing procedures and experimental programs to support research objectives, validate models, de-risk technology concepts, and generate design data.
- Develop new models, correlations, methods, and workflows that can be deployed by engineers to design and optimize heat exchangers and LNG process systems.
- Partner with the Process Engineering team to incorporate improvements into design methods, engineering tools, standards, and work practices; provide technical reviews for critical methods and deliverables.
- Protect and expand LNG technology intellectual property by identifying invention opportunities, leading patent disclosures, and supporting patent applications and freedom-to-practice discussions.
- Collaborate with business and product owners to understand market and customer needs, create differentiated technology ideas, evaluate business value, and translate concepts into actionable development programs.
- Follow, assess, and influence leading academic and industrial research initiatives in LNG liquefaction, gas separation, cryogenics, and heat exchanger design; bring external insights into Honeywell technology plans.
- Mentor and coach engineers and scientists, provide technical guidance on complex problem-solving, and help build organizational capability in process simulation, LNG technologies, and research execution.
- Communicate technical recommendations, project status, risks, and business impact clearly to engineering leadership, product management, and cross-functional stakeholders.
YOU MUST HAVE
- B.S. or M.S. in Chemical Engineering and minimum 8 years of experience in a technology development, R&D, or process engineering role in industrial gases, LNG, cryogenic technologies, or related process industries; detailed knowledge of cryogenic technologies such as hydrocarbon cryogenics and LNG; OR Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering with significant relevant research or industrial experience.
- Strong fundamental knowledge of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, phase behavior, and cryogenic process design.
- Demonstrated steady-state process simulation experience and ability to apply simulation results to process cycle development, equipment design, and technology decisions.
- Proven ability to lead technically complex projects or workstreams with cross-functional stakeholders and translate ambiguous problems into executable research or development plans.
- Demonstrated capability to develop, validate, and deploy engineering models, methods, or design tools.
- Strong technical communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical findings, recommendations, and trade-offs to senior technical and business stakeholders.
WE VALUE
- 10 years of experience in LNG liquefaction, pre-treatment, gas separation, cryogenic technology, industrial gases, or chemical manufacturing technology development.
- Ph.D. or advanced degree in Chemical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Deep expertise in LNG process cycles, cryogenic heat exchanger design, two-phase flow, advanced thermodynamics, and/or equipment performance modeling.
- Patent writing and filing experience, with a track record of identifying and protecting differentiated technology.
- Experience leading stage-gated technology development programs from concept through validation, scale-up, commercialization, or deployment.
- Ability to mentor technical talent, influence without direct authority, and create a positive and productive technical work environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication, organizational, interpersonal, and stakeholder management skills.
- Creates business value by delivering results with urgency, technical rigor, and a strong focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and customer needs.
