Job Description:

Department

Chiefs – Hedge Accounting Operations is a group of dedicated professionals within Chief Accountants Department that provides support for several lines of business across the bank (Wholesale, Treasury, Mortgages, Offshore Finance and Visa). This position is to provide hedge accounting support primarily for Canadian Hedging strategies (Including new initiatives), Treasury and Balance Sheet Management (US and Canada) and Regulatory reporting  / Tax group.

Position Summary

The individual is responsible for driving accurate, complete, and timely inputs for various reports/disclosures related to Canadian hedge accounting portfolio during month ends, fiscal quarter ends, and year end. The role includes conveying derivative results, analysis and information supporting regulatory reporting to other business lines within the Bank including Treasury, TD Securities, Corporate

The role will also be involved in working directly with Front Office, FinOps and Treasury. The incumbent will develop expertise in IFRS Hedge accounting principles, accounting operations and complex issues relating to the accounting for IFRS.

The role will also include certain adhoc and routine work related to hedge accounting for Treasury, Wholesale and Corporate, including end to end review and detailed documentation of existing procedures and workflow.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of senior financial analysts with responsibilities for performing general accounting and finance reporting functions, which include:

    • Gathering of manual and system generated data to prepare, review and post journal entries and required transactions

    • Preparation and review account reconciliations

    • Production, preparation and review of Financial, Regulatory, and Management Reporting for business lines, including data gathering, cleansing and validation

    • Supporting key stakeholders for reporting needs and requirements

    • Analysis and investigation of financials

  • Preparation of CAD hedging portfolio results monthly

  • Execute existing process controls and implement new controls as needed

  • Analyze operational issues and recommend strategic solutions to make improvements and create efficiencies.

  • Strive for operational excellence through ongoing process improvements

  • Assist in the assessment of infrastructure and implementation of new initiatives

  • Keep abreast of legal and regulatory changes

  • Maintain knowledge of the end-to-end processes and serve as a subject matter expert/partner for various teams throughout the Bank

  • Participate in and/or lead ad-hoc requests/projects of various types

  • Support compilation of reporting for internal and external auditors

  • Cross-train with other team members on operational aspects of hedge accounting

Other functions

  • Develop expertise in accounting and policy requirements for hedge accounting

  • Monitor daily and weekly process runs and identify and escalate issues in a timely manner

  • Identify accounting and operational issues and provide recommendations for resolution

  • Ensure accounting and management information is complete, accurate, and timely.

  • Strive for continuous process improvement opportunities in line with Chief Accountant and Controller's philosophy

  • Ensure processes and controls are maintained function efficiently and effectively in line with controls frameworks and policies

  • Deliver on month end reporting for Canadian hedge accounting strategies

  • Review and supervise month end reconciliations of general ledger

  • Oversee intensive manual processes and work with complex excel files, demonstrating strong attention to detail. 

  • Efficient and effective management, and account reconciliation in accordance with TDBFG policy.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and work effectively in teams

  • Oversee year end close process. 

  • Work with External / Internal auditors, SOX group and regulators in resolving audit queries.

  • Ensure Data integrity and Completeness / reasonability checks.

  • Compliance with Hedge maintenance requirements for hedging strategies.

Qualifications

  • Fast learner, strong analytical skills and critical thinking capabilities to frame and structure complex issues effectively, and develop insights and recommendations

  • Superior attention to detail and comfort reviewing documentation

  • Strong project management and planning skills

  • Excellent verbal communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills

  • Strong time management and organization skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines

  • Demonstrate resourcefulness and initiative in an evolving and sometimes unstructured workplace

  • Proven proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to manipulate large data sets

  • Good understanding of hedge accounting principles preferred

  • Accounting designation is highly desirable

  • Ability to work independently

  • Capital Market and specific business line product knowledge and experience is strongly preferred

  • Operations experience in the financial services industry strongly preferred

  • Must be able to work with individuals from other areas to achieve objectives

  • Knowledge of back office(s), systems (Calypso and PeopleSoft) and processes would be an asset

  • Good understanding of EIRM amortization process (IFRS) is preferred

  • MS Access and macro development skills would be an asset

  • Ability to manage deadlines, multiple tasks and adapt well to changing priorities

  • Must be able to stay resilient under pressure.
