Safety and Occupational Health Specialist

The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR). OFMR provides the full range of building services through eight maintenance and operational zones. More than one selection may be made from this announcement. In this position, you will: Investigate accidents involving personnel, visitors and volunteers; prepare and/or obtain reports and necessary documentation, information from witnesses, pictures, etc.; analyze accident statistical data and develop remedial measures when indicated in conjunction with OPS and OSHEM. Responsible for the coordination of the safety program for staff, visitors, and volunteers; serve as technical advisor on safety related issues to the facility staff; evaluate, through on-site inspections, the level of safety and environmental health at the facility; originate and recommend corrective action if needed; insure compliance with all applicable codes and standards. Develop and present safety training programs for new as well as existing employees; promote activities for maintaining interest in accident prevention, including publication of statistics for the facility; obtain and display safety posters and charts; write and disseminate information to employees and volunteers on the safety program, as required; develop training material for supervisors and employees; compile and summarize information for inclusion in Safety reports to the facility Director and to OSHEM. Develop and present the SISCSISC Hazard Communication Program; keeping current a chemical inventory for all facility divisions; and keeping current on MSDS library for all facility divisions and ensuring proper labeling and storage for all chemicals in the facility.
