Position Summary
The Tax Manager is responsible for managing tax compliance, planning, and consulting services for a diverse client base of individuals, businesses, trusts, and nonprofit organizations. This role oversees multiple client engagements, reviews tax returns, mentors staff, maintains strong client relationships, and ensures work is completed accurately and on schedule. In a smaller CPA firm, the Tax Manager is expected to be actively involved in technical tax work while contributing to practice development and operational efficiency.
Essential Responsibilities
Manage multiple tax engagements from planning through completion while meeting deadlines and budget expectations.
Review and prepare federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, partnerships, S corporations, C corporations, trusts, estates, and nonprofit organizations.
Provide proactive tax planning and consulting to minimize client tax liabilities and identify planning opportunities.
Research complex tax issues and communicate findings and recommendations to clients and firm leadership.
Serve as the primary contact for assigned clients, building long-term relationships through responsive and professional service.
Supervise, mentor, and develop tax staff and seniors by reviewing work, providing feedback, and supporting professional growth.
Coordinate workflow, assign projects, and monitor engagement progress throughout the tax season.
Assist clients with IRS and state tax notices, examinations, and correspondence.
Stay current on changes in tax laws, regulations, and industry developments, ensuring compliance and advising clients accordingly.
Identify opportunities for additional services and participate in business development and client retention efforts.
Collaborate with partners on tax strategies, firm initiatives, and process improvements.
Maintain accurate engagement documentation and comply with firm quality control standards.
Support year-round client advisory services, including estimated tax planning, entity selection, succession planning, and business consulting.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; Master's in Taxation preferred.
Active CPA license required.
6+ years of progressive public accounting tax experience.
Experience reviewing complex tax returns across multiple entity types.
Strong knowledge of federal and state tax laws and regulations.
Previous supervisory or team leadership experience.
Experience with tax preparation and research software (e.g., CCH Axcess, ProSystem fx, UltraTax CS, Lacerte, or similar).
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
