This leadership role is responsible for defining and scaling a comprehensive Total Rewards strategy that shapes how employees are compensated, supported, and recognized across a fully remote, mission-driven organization. You will design and govern compensation, benefits, payroll, and recognition frameworks that reflect both equity principles and organizational values. The role requires a balance of strategic architecture and hands-on execution, ensuring systems are both compliant and deeply human-centered. You will partner closely with senior leadership to translate workforce strategy into sustainable rewards programs that support long-term growth. This position also plays a key role in strengthening employee experience across a diverse workforce, including union and non-union staff and 24/7 shift-based teams. Accountabilities:
- Define and lead the overall Total Rewards philosophy, including compensation positioning, internal equity principles, and transparency frameworks aligned with organizational values.
- Design and oversee compensation structures, job architecture, and leveling frameworks to ensure fairness, clarity, and growth pathways.
- Lead annual compensation cycles, including merit, promotion, and incentive processes, ensuring consistency and equity across the organization.
- Develop and maintain benefits, retirement, and wellbeing programs that are competitive, compliant, and aligned with employee needs.
- Ensure full compliance with ERISA, ACA reporting, 5500 filings, and multi-state payroll and labor regulations.
- Oversee payroll strategy and partner with operational leads to ensure accuracy, reporting, and financial alignment.
- Build and evolve recognition and rewards programs that reinforce culture, belonging, and organizational values.
- Lead and mentor the Total Rewards team, fostering accountability, collaboration, and technical excellence.
- Partner with Finance, Legal, Communications, and People teams to align Total Rewards strategy with broader organizational priorities.
- Develop dashboards, reporting frameworks, and governance structures to ensure transparency and continuous improvement.
- Drive leave, accommodation, and compliance strategies across a complex, multi-state, shift-based workforce.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on compensation, benefits, and workforce planning decisions.
- 8+ years of progressive experience in Total Rewards, including compensation, benefits, and payroll leadership in complex or multi-state organizations.
- Proven experience designing or transforming compensation philosophies, job architecture, and pay structures in mission-driven environments.
- Deep expertise in benefits administration, retirement plans, ACA compliance, ERISA, and 5500 filings.
- Strong knowledge of multi-state payroll compliance and workforce regulations, including union or CBA environments.
- Experience managing leave and accommodation programs across diverse, distributed, or shift-based workforces.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing and developing high-performing teams.
- Strong analytical and financial modeling skills, including advanced Excel and HRIS systems proficiency.
- Ability to balance strategic design with hands-on operational execution in fast-paced environments.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills across all organizational levels.
- Strong emotional intelligence, discretion, and ability to navigate sensitive or confidential matters.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and values-driven HR practices.
- Spanish language proficiency and experience in global or distributed organizations are a plus.
- Competitive salary range: $125,000 – $140,000.
