A Nuclear Chemistry Technician at a commercial nuclear plant ensures reactor safety and efficiency by monitoring, testing, and controlling plant chemical systems. They analyze coolant and waste samples for radioactivity and corrosion, adjust chemical treatments, and enforce strict radiation compliance.
Core Responsibilities
· Sampling & Analysis: Collect and process samples of reactor water, steam, and plant effluents to test for chemical purity and radioactive contamination.
· Data Evaluation: Input readings into tracking systems (e.g., RADACS) to evaluate parameters, such as pH, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen.
· Chemical Adjustments: Recommend and perform chemical treatments to control corrosion in the primary and secondary plant loops.
· Instrumentation Calibration: Ensure that laboratory equipment, online process monitors, and radiation detectors are accurately standardized.
· Instrumentation Utilization:
o ICs
o Boron Titrator
o pH meter
o Conductivity Meter
o Count Room QCs (recommended - not required)
o FTIR
o AA
o ICP
o Chlorine Titrator
