ABOUT THE ROLE

Card payments remain the backbone of Uber's global payments volume. As Head of Card Payments, you will own the full card payments lifecycle — from authorization performance, operations, regulatory compliance, and new market/business model implementation. You will lead a senior team spanning card operations and implementations and will serve as Uber's internal authority on all things card.

This role demands both depth and breadth. A command of card scheme rules, processing flows, and technical integrations, as well as the ability to translate payments complexity into business outcomes across Uber's global lines of business.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
Card Payments Strategy & Ownership:

  • Own Uber's global card payments strategy, including acceptance coverage, routing optimization, cost management, and product roadmap for card-based payment methods
  • Define the multi-year vision for card payments at Uber, encompassing credit, debit, prepaid, commercial cards, and emerging card-adjacent products (e.g., virtual cards, tokenization, push-to-card)
  • Monitor global card payments trends — including scheme mandates, interchange shifts, open banking, and card-not-present regulation — and translate these into strategic recommendations

Operations & Performance Management:

  • Own end-to-end card payment operations, including authorization rates, decline management, and reconciliation
  • Define and hold accountability for card payments KPIs: approval rates, cost per transaction, chargeback rates, and operational SLAs
  • Build and lead a payments operations team responsible for day-to-day performance monitoring, incident response, and partner SLA management
  • Drive continuous improvement programs to optimize authorization performance and reduce processing costs across acquiring relationships

Card Implementations & Technical Delivery:

  • Lead the implementation function responsible for onboarding new card acquirers, processors, and scheme integrations, including technical scoping, certification, and go-live
  • Oversee Uber's card tokenization strategy, including 3DS, network tokens, and device tokenization programs across card scheme partners
  • Partner with Engineering and Product to define card payment infrastructure requirements, including failover logic, intelligent routing, and real-time decline recovery
  • Own the card certification calendar and manage scheme mandate compliance (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover, UnionPay, and regional networks)

Fraud, Risk & Compliance:

  • Collaborate with Uber's fraud, risk, and compliance teams to maintain a strong card fraud posture across all global markets
  • Ensure compliance with PCI-DSS standards, card scheme rules, and relevant regional card regulations
  • Partner with Risk to optimize the chargeback and dispute management program, including a strategy for representation

Team & Stakeholder Leadership:

  • Build and lead a multi-disciplinary team spanning card operations, implementations, scheme management, and card performance
  • Serve as the internal subject-matter expert on card payments, advising Product, Legal, Finance, and Regional leadership on card-related decisions
  • Represent Uber in scheme working groups, industry forums, and bilateral partner discussions on card product and policy matters

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • 10+ years of experience in card payments, with deep expertise in card operations, processing, or card product at a merchant, PSP, acquirer, or card scheme
  • Strong technical knowledge of card payment flows: authorization, clearing, settlement, 3DS, tokenization, and dispute lifecycle
  • Experience owning card acceptance infrastructure and driving authorization rate improvement programs
  • Familiarity with major card scheme rules (Visa, Mastercard, AmEx, and Discover) and compliance requirements (PCI-DSS, SCA/3DS2)
  • Track record of building and leading high-performing, cross-functional payments teams
  • Strong analytical and commercial acumen — comfortable with large data sets and payment economics modeling
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills across technical, commercial, and executive audiences
  • Experience in a global, high-volume payments environment is strongly preferred
  • Bachelor's degree required; technical degree or MBA a plus
