Lead Mechanical Design Engineer - Static and Dynamic Analysis
Be part of a team that designs aircraft wheels and brakes for the commercial and military aerospace industry. You will prioritize safety and quality in everything you do. As the subject matter expert for wheel and brake static and dynamic analysis, you will perform structural and dynamic evaluations of aircraft wheel and brake assemblies throughout all phases of the IPDS process—from Conceptual Design through Critical Design, Production, and Service.
You will author test plans, define instrumentation requirements, and oversee the setup and execution of static and dynamic testing to ensure data integrity. You will process and analyze test data to assess the dynamic performance of wheel and brake systems. In this role, you will interact with customer representatives as well as engineering teams based in South Bend, IN, and at sites in China, India, Mexico, and other locations.
You will mentor less‑experienced colleagues and develop novel engineering tools that deliver orders‑of‑magnitude improvements in cost and cycle time. This position reports directly to the Sr. Mechanical Design Engineering Manager and is based at our South Bend, IN site on a hybrid schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform static and dynamic analysis on wheel & brake components and assemblies
- Document analysis results in engineering reports and present findings to internal and external stakeholders
- Review and approve component and assembly drawings for aircraft wheels and brakes
- Author and review test procedures and reports
- Support vibration testing, including instrumentation selection, setup, and data analysis.
- Evaluate manufacturing discrepancies for structural integrity and support service issues (CMM deviations, component failures, service life extension requests)
- Support other product lines as needed
- Improve existing engineering processes by eliminating non-value-added tasks and introducing automation through Python and other methods
YOU MUST HAVE
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
- At least 5 years of experience in the following areas:
- Static analysis, including nonlinear and elevated temperature material behavior
- Fatigue analysis for crack initiation
- Damage tolerance analysis for crack growth using NASGRO
- Dynamic analysis, including modal analysis of real and complex eigenvalue problems, harmonic response analysis, and transient response analysis
- Finite element modeling in ANSYS, ABAQUS, and/or NASTRAN
- Creep analysis
- Engineering drawing interpretation
- Ability to support multiple projects
- Ability to work independently
- Willingness to learn new concepts independently
- US Person
WE VALUE
- Python coding experience using NumPY, SciPy, Pandas, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar libraries
- PATRAN finite element modeling experience
- DMAP programming
- Master’s Degree in relevant concentration
- Mechanical design experience using Siemens NX, Catia, or similar CAD package
- Composite material experience
- Experience with self-excited and friction-induced vibration
- Hands-on static and structural dynamics test experience
- MATLAB experience
