Newark, CAfull_time$90k–$115kPosted Apr 29, 2026
**Phoenix Bioinformatics**
**Phoenix Bioinformatics** is looking for a Full-Stack Software Engineer to join our scientific data non-profit organization. We are a hands-on team motivated by a mission to sustain the data infrastructure that powers global research in plant biology, paleontology, and evolutionary biology.
### **The Role**
You will work closely with our Director of Engineering to build and iterate on our core platforms, **TAIR**and **MorphoBank**, and our supporting access and curation infrastructure. You thrive in an environment that provides the opportunity to wear many hats while learning and growing.
### **Note on AI Tools**
We are an AI-forward shop. We expect you to leverage coding assistants (such as Copilot, Claude, or Cursor) to handle repetitive coding tasks and accelerate development, while applying the senior-level judgment needed to ensure code quality and security.
### **Responsibilities**
- **Own your code**: Take pride in what you build, support it when it breaks, and critically review all contributions (whether human or AI) before merging.
- **Full-Stack Development**: Design and implement features across the database, UI, and infrastructure.
- **Agile Delivery**: Deliver working code quickly using modern techniques, including AI-assisted prototyping.
- **Collaborate**: Share context with colleagues and participate in thorough peer reviews.
### **Qualifications**
- **2+ years of full-stack experience** (internships or externships count).
- **Proficiency in Java, JavaScript, and Python**.
- Working knowledge of **modern UI frameworks** (React, Vue, or similar), **relational databases**, and **AWS** (EC2, S3, or Lambda).
- **AI Literacy**: Comfort using LLM tools and the ability to debug or refactor code you did not write from scratch.
- **Education**: BS in Computer Science or a related field (an MS is a plus).
- **Eligibility**: Applicants must be eligible for employment in the United States.
### **You’re a Great Fit If**
- **You love the startup mindset**: You enjoy the autonomy of small, nimble teams.
- **You’re curious about life sciences**: You want to build tools that help scientists solve big problems.
- **You’re an AI power-user**: You have already integrated LLMs into your workflow and know exactly where they help and where they miss the mark.
- **You’re a solid contributor**: You have a track record of shipping real-world projects, whether through professional work, open-source, or side projects.
- **You’ve explored in the weeds**: You have a working knowledge of the modern dev ecosystem (Docker, CI/CD pipelines, or infrastructure-as-code), and you are not afraid to dive into the ops side when needed.
### **About Us**
Founded in 2013, Phoenix Bioinformatics develops business models to sustain the research infrastructure that academic researchers rely on worldwide. Our flagship plant biology database, **TAIR**, serves over 160,000 researchers per month. We also maintain **MorphoBank**, a collaborative web application for evolutionary research using morphological data matrices and images. We combine the experimentation of a startup, the passion of a nonprofit, and the stable benefits of a mature company.
### **Benefits Compensation**
- **Compensation**: $90,000 to $115,000
- **Remote Flexible**: Fully remote with flexible hours.
- **Generous Time Off**: 12 holidays, 18 vacation days, and 9 sick days per year. One personal day per pay period (24 per year).
- **Excellent Health Insurance**: 99% of employee premiums and 70% of dependent premiums covered for our base plan, with the flexibility to choose other providers.
- **Retirement**: 401K with a matching contribution up to 8% of salary.
- **Visa Support**: We are an H1B cap-exempt organization. We can sponsor visas that are not subject to the annual quota.
