About Marktplaats
Marktplaats is one of the Netherlands' leading online marketplaces, helping make commerce more sustainable by giving products an extended life. With over 2.1 million buyers and sellers visiting our platform every day, around 350,000 new listings added daily and users spending an average of 22 minutes per visit, we're building a platform that people use and trust. Every connection we enable helps people save money, earn money and reduce waste. As part of Adevinta, one of Europe's leading online classifieds groups, we're building products that make buying and selling second-hand products simpler, safer and better for everyone.

This role sits within our Product & Technology function in our Amsterdam office, home to over 300 talented professionals, where cross-functional teams design, develop and scale the products that millions of users rely on every day across our Benelux marketplaces, Marktplaats and 2dehands/2ememain.

The Growth crew makes the marketplace grow, keeps it safe, and keeps it discoverable. It spans four teams: MarTech (CRM, lifecycle messaging, campaign and attribution tooling), SalesTech (the tooling that powers our advertising and sales operations, including order-to-cash flows and billing), Trust & Safety (content moderation, fraud prevention and platform integrity), and SEO (organic discoverability at the scale of hundreds of millions of pages). As Group Engineering Manager you lead the Engineering Managers of these teams and report directly to the Head of Product Engineering, operating at the intersection of engineering, marketing, sales and trust.

What You Will Do
  • Set and drive the technical strategy for the Growth crew across MarTech, SalesTech, Trust & Safety and SEO, while empowering the teams to own execution.
  • Lead, grow and mentor the four Engineering Managers, and through them a broader organisation of skilled engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, autonomy and accountability.
  • Own delivery across the crew: ensure teams ship predictably, balance run and change work deliberately, and act decisively when delivery or quality is off-track.
  • Partner closely with your Product counterpart and commercial stakeholders to translate marketing and sales goals into a sound engineering roadmap, and with your peer Group Engineering Managers to build on shared platform capabilities.
  • Own the financials of the crew: headcount, cloud and third-party tooling spend, making deliberate trade-offs between investment, efficiency and delivery.
  • A key challenge: drive the adoption of AI within the crew, both in the products we build (moderation, personalisation, campaign optimisation) and in how the teams work, scaling what demonstrably works.
  • Another: operate in a vendor-heavy, commercially exposed domain where business priorities, third-party platforms and regulatory expectations (such as the Digital Services Act) all evolve quickly.

Who You Are
  • 8+ years of professional experience in software engineering, with substantial experience leading engineering teams, ideally including Engineering Managers as direct reports.
  • Solid technical credibility in modern backend and data-heavy engineering; you can engage meaningfully on event-driven architectures, integrations with third-party marketing and sales platforms, and machine learning applications such as fraud and content moderation.
  • Affinity with the commercial side of a marketplace: you understand how marketing technology, sales tooling and SEO drive business results, and you enjoy working with commercial stakeholders as much as with engineers.
  • Proven ability to lead and inspire skilled, opinionated knowledge workers, earning technical respect while setting clear direction.
  • Commercial and financial acumen, with experience owning the budget of an engineering group, including cloud and vendor spend.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with a data-driven approach to prioritisation, delivery and performance.

Bonus Points
  • Experience with trust and safety engineering and the regulatory context around it (DSA or comparable frameworks).
  • A clear point of view on how AI is changing software engineering, and a track record of driving adoption of new tools and ways of working.
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field.

Our Tech Stack
  • Languages: Java, Scala
  • Cloud: (mostly) AWS
  • Other tools: Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Kafka, ElasticSearch, MySQL, RabbitMQ, GitHub, DataDog
  • Area-specific tools: Braze, Zeotap, Salesforce, Mulesoft, GoTransverse, Threatmetrix

This role is based out of our Amsterdam office. While we offer flexibility, we value in-person collaboration and encourage our teams to spend regular time in the office.
