Medical Records and Health Information Manager

Medical Records & Health Information Manager
Remote · Full-Time · $75,000–$80,000

Every record we hold belongs to a kid who trusted us with the hardest parts of their story. We need someone who treats that seriously.

Backpack Healthcare provides mental health care for children, teens, and young adults, all online, across a growing list of states. We're clinician-led and minority-owned, built by a founder who started this company because she couldn't find a Medicaid-accepting provider for her own son. That same standard, care that actually reaches the families who need it, applies to how we handle their information.

We're looking for someone to build our Health Information Management function from the ground up. Not maintain one. Build one.

What this role looks like

You'll own medical records and release of information end to end: HIPAA, state regulations, payer requirements, CARF standards, all of it. You'll design the workflows, policies, and tracking systems that don't exist yet, and build the reporting that shows whether they're working. You'll partner closely with Compliance, Legal, Clinical Operations, Technology, and Quality, and you'll be the person staff come to when a records question gets complicated. Because in this work, it usually does.

What you bring

  • 3+ years in Health Information Management, Medical Records, Release of Information, Healthcare Compliance, or related healthcare operations (5+ preferred)
  • Solid working knowledge of HIPAA Privacy Rules and medical records regulations
  • Experience handling high-volume records requests and sensitive documentation
  • A track record of building workflows, policies, SOPs, and process improvements from scratch
  • Sound judgment under legally sensitive or high-stakes requests
  • Strong organizational skills and real attention to detail
  • Clear, confident communication across clinical and operational teams

Nice to have

  • RHIA, RHIT, CHPS, CHPC, CHP, or similar (actively pursuing counts too)
  • Background in behavioral health, pediatrics, Medicaid, telehealth, CARF accreditation, or multi-state operations
  • Familiarity with EHRs, patient portals, secure health information exchange, and ROI vendors

Why this role

You won't be inheriting someone else's system. You'll be the one who decides how this function runs as we grow into more states. You'll work alongside people who care about getting this right, not just fast, and you'll see the direct line between your work and a family's ability to trust us with their kid's care.

Work environment

Primarily remote, with occasional scheduled meetings, training, audits, or team events. Minimal travel.
