They speak directly to young, working class Americans by reporting on the real struggles and challenges of people from a working class perspective and connecting those problems to potential solutions.
Since launching in February 2021, More Perfect Union’s Emmy award-winning coverage has garnered over 6 million followers and subscribers and become the fastest growing, left-of-center YouTube channel. Their work seeks to embolden and empower the working class to engage in building our democracy for the betterment of all working Americans.
About the Position
The Major Gifts Director will play a central role in supporting More Perfect Union’s next phase of growth. The person will lead expansion of the development function of one of the fastest growing nonprofit media organizations in the country at a critical time. This is a highly collaborative role, working closely with the Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer, and Editor-in-Chief to advance major donor and foundation fundraising in support of sustainability growing More Perfect Union.
This person will advance the organization's major gift fundraising strategy and directly influence the development of organizational priorities and long-term financial goals. They will also strengthen development systems, and create materials and messaging that are aligned with organizational priorities.
The ideal candidate will have a deep passion for the mission of More Perfect Union and be able to effectively translate that passion into the major gifts fundraising work of the organization. They should be both strategic and detail oriented, comfortable managing multiple workstreams, a great communicator and writer, and excited to help grow major gifts development functions within a fast growing media organization.
Core Responsibilities:
- In close partnership with Senior Leadership, plan and lead the organization’s major gift fundraising strategy, including donor prioritization, portfolio management, and donor engagement
- Maintain portfolio of major donors, engage donors in written communication, phone calls, visits and relationship maintenance
- Perform regular prospecting for the organization
- Manage and support outreach to major donors and foundations, including research, preparation of materials, donor briefings, meeting follow up, and ongoing relationship tracking
- Lead the creation, maintenance, and regular updating of written development materials, including pitch decks, donor briefs, grant narratives, and background documents
- Develop innovative major donor engagement approaches, solicitation timing, and stewardship priorities to help More Perfect Union continue to expand
- Exercise discretion in advising senior leadership on fundraising and development goals, with fundraising projections
- Track development activity and progress toward fundraising goals, and help identify opportunities to strengthen and expand support
- Scheduling donors meetings as needed
- Collaborate across teams to ensure fundraising materials accurately reflect editorial priorities, organizational impact, and future plans
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet expected deadlines
- Maintain high standard of work in a nimble, fast paced environment
- Travel as required for visits
- Perform other duties as assigned
Experience/Qualifications:
- At least 5 years experience in nonprofit or political fundraising/development at progressive organizations, advocacy groups, or media organizations
- Strong writing and editing skills, with experience creating donor facing materials such as decks, proposals, or memos
- Experience in principal management
- Experience with major donor and foundation fundraising, including relationship management, outreach support and solicitation
- Highly organized and detail oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
- Familiarity with SalesForce or other CRM system
- Comfortable working closely with senior leadership and supporting high level fundraising efforts
- Ability to be nimble, hustle and flexible
- Excitement about building systems and processes in a fast paced, growing organization
