Senior Technical Product Manager, Data Center Engineering
The internet runs the world. Organizations across the world—from offices and schools to data centers and manufacturing facilities—spend billions annually on computer networking to stay productive.
However, these networks are messy and brittle. Traditional networking companies only build one piece of the puzzle—either hardware, software, or operations—but never all three, leading to inefficient silos and slow changes. Network engineers, who are the lifeblood of the industry, are often left scrambling to fix issues, hand editing configs, guess-and-checking solutions, and worrying how the ever-increasing complexity of the system they manage will break.
Meter has spent the last decade vertically integrating the fragmented computer networking industry across hardware (power, routing, switches, security, wireless), firmware, operating systems, and real-world operations. By owning the full stack, we make it exceptionally easy for any business to have great networking, internet, and Wi-Fi. We believe people who build hardware and software should be the ones responsible for it. Our ambition is to evolve internet infrastructure into a utility, and we raised a $170M Series C to advance our work.
Why data centers?
Data centers are the next step in the evolution of Meter’s product line. We’ve built a strong business providing enterprise and campus networks to our customers, and now we need to build upon our platform to help customers move data into, out of, and across their data centers.
What success looks like
Your job is to clarify what we should build, align internal teams on this vision, and iterate with early partners and customers. This will span the hardware, firmware, and software requirements for Meter’s Data Center product line. You will work cross-functionally, working closely with Meter's founders and engineering leadership.
Your goal is to accelerate the product release, while keeping quality high and preventing the team from falling into traps. By the end of your first year, you’ll have helped launch our Data Center product line with success being measured by the following:
Product Velocity: Meter’s TOR and spine switching products are released on time because you helped the team avoid mistakes and reduced weekly decision fatigue.
Product Quality: Meter’s TOR and spine switching products are deployed without high severity issues three months post-deployment.
What your day-to-day will look like
You’ll own everything from considering hardware tradeoffs—like component quality and placement for desired cost and performance—to firmware implications, like control plane feature density and its resource availability, to the design of an API.
You'll partner with engineering team leads and senior engineers to help us understand what to build, and in what order, while constantly learning and bringing industry learnings to Meter.
Great work happens through sheer perseverance and doing the basics really well (e.g., speaking to one more potential customer, running one more test, asking why one more time, etc.).
Who you are
You've built networking products for high-performance environments like data centers.
You have a track record of identifying issues before they arise and bringing clear solutions to your dependent engineering teams.
You have a strong curiosity for and knowledge of data center networking across hardware, firmware, and software.
You’re dependable, kind, and can operate autonomously.
Compensation
The estimated pay range for this role is $210,000 - 300,000.
Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Meter's equity plan.
