Job Summary and Responsibilities

This job is responsible for the planning, coordination and placement of patients within the facility. Additionally, hospital supervisors have delegated administrative responsibility and authority for the supervision of hospital personnel and functions within assigned facility, including patient care delivery, in the absence of Administrator or Department leader. An incumbent has the authority, after consultation with the Department leader or Administrator on-call, to suspend employees whose performance endangers patient care or the ability of other employees to function. Incumbents are limited to performing these duties during shifts where there is no on-site Administrator or Department leader.  Serves as the leader and resource person in facilitating efficient operational activities throughout the facility. Effectively serves as an administrative representative knowledgeable about hospital/organizational policy and procedures. Job duties require the services of a Registered Nurse who, based on training and work experience, uses professional knowledge and judgment in recognizing and addressing operational risks and supervising nursing and care staff, in determining the staffing needs to meet safe patient care requirements, in understanding and interpreting the clinical acuity/diagnoses of patients to ensure that patients are placed appropriately, and to appropriately respond to disasters and codes.

  • Patient Placement and Hospital ThroughputPlans, coordinates and performs patient placement in alignment with standard work for patient placement. Maintain primary focus on timely bed placement to ensure hospital throughput is maintained.Serves as a leader and key resource in facilitating efficient and safe operational activities throughout the facility. Notifies appropriate leaders or IC/AOC if operational concerns are present and supports the activation of incident command to respond to critical events.Coordinates internal transfers and direct admissions with VMFH transfer center.Maintains situation awareness of hospital capacity utilizing available dashboards. Provides succinct, accurate, and current debriefing, to include bed status, planned admits and transfers and other pertinent information during all hand offs, during daily safety huddle, afternoon update and incident command meetings.
  • LeadershipResponsible for problem resolution and/or coordination by following the appropriate chain of command. The direct chain of command for questions or concerns is Manager and then Director. Urgent operational issues would be directed through IC (business hours) and AOC after hours and weekends.Serves as an administrative representative and resource to staff, including hospital policy/procedures and/or provides assistance with problem solving.Applies knowledge and skill to problem solving situations with minimal supervision.Ensures communication flow to all stakeholders and appropriate resources, including department directors/managers, physicians, external agencies, and internal personnel and staff in clinical and non-clinical areas.Activates appropriate personnel as warranted by assessment of situation and protocols.Consistently demonstrates awareness of risk sensitive issues and reports them to the RN in charge, manager, and/or director, including patient/family concerns, physician concerns and quality of care concerns.Mentors new staff and house supervisors.Performs real-time service recovery for care concerns with patients and families.
  • Incident ResponseFacilitates hospital’s response to unusual incidents so that actual risk to the hospital is minimized.Responds to and initiates disaster plans in accordance with hospital disaster plans so that hospital resources are optimally placed in a time of crisis.Directs/responds to emergency situations and ensures appropriate documentation. Ensure incident reports are created where appropriate to document safety concerns or events.May update the Emergency Response network daily.
  • General FunctionsScreens all new 1:1 sitter requests for appropriateness and monitors safety 1:1 necessity shift to shift.Coordinates shift to shift staffing needs with charges RNs and the central staffing office. Makes operational decisions as needed based on staffing levels. Supports calling staff in after hours when the central staffing office is closed.Acts as a point of contact for coordination of funeral homes and arrangements with decedent families. Oversees daily morgue census and coordinates as needed with security lead to manage morgue capacity.
  • Cultural Sensitivity and Competence: Demonstrates proper use of communication tools/materials for effective communication and understands how the culture(s) of patient populations can affect communication, collaboration and the provision of care, treatment and services. Patient Population Served: Demonstrates knowledge and proper skills associated with the department’s defined specific populations served.

Job Requirements

Required

  • Associates Other Nursing and 1-3 years Clinical work experience as a Registered Nurse, including a minimum of two years recent work experience in a supervisory, management or other healthcare leadership capacity that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge skills/abilities., upon hire and
  • Registered Nurse: WA, upon hire and
  • Basic Life Support - CPR, upon hire

Preferred

  • Bachelors Of Science Nursing or related field, upon hire
