In this role, you’ll lead and develop a specialty casualty claims team, driving high-quality, timely claim resolution and consistent decision-making. You’ll guide strategy on complex claims—advising on coverage, reserving, and loss exposure—while ensuring strong compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements. You’ll partner cross-functionally to address claim trends and escalations, and play a key role in overseeing litigated matters by shaping strategy, evaluating counsel, and driving effective, cost-conscious outcomes. Through leadership, communication, and financial oversight, you’ll enhance team performance, strengthen claim results, and deliver a consistent, high-quality experience for stakeholders.
Essential Functions:
Leads and develops the specialty casualty claims team to ensure high-quality, accurate, and timely claim resolution
Monitors and reinforces reserve adequacy, accuracy, and timely updates across claims
Reviews complex claims and advises on coverage, evaluation, loss exposure, payments, and resolution strategy
Ensures adherence to claims handling procedures, best practices, and internal guidelines
Oversees compliance with reserving and litigation standards
Leads and participates in round-table discussions across Claims, Underwriting, Risk Control, and Marketing
Addresses customer and regulatory complaints in alignment with compliance standards
Participates in Claim Committee and other operational committees
Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations
Collaborates cross-functionally to resolve escalations and ensure accurate, timely reporting
Oversees litigated claims, including counsel performance, strategy effectiveness, and cost management
Reviews cases pre-trial to assess settlement opportunities and grants trial authority as appropriate
Monitors team workload, performance, and overall operational effectiveness
Models strong communication standards and ensures alignment across internal teams and external partners
Supports budgeting, expense oversight (DCCE/AOE), and financial planning for the specialty casualty function
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience
Ten years of experience with commercial casualty claims handling in progressively responsible roles, including experience with handling litigated claims
Insurance designations such as AIC, CIC, AIM, and CPCU preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Ability to obtain applicable state licenses
Strong knowledge of specialty claim file handling such as Environmental, Construction Defect, Linebacker, EPLI, Law Enforcement, and/or UM/UIM lines of business
Superior knowledge of the claim functions
Excellent analytical ability and knowledge of legal liability and coverage
Excellent leadership qualities with ability to motivate staff in the handling and disposition of claims
Excellent knowledge of insurance contracts and legal aspects of court procedures affecting legal liability for casualty line of insurance
Ability to adhere to high standards of professional conduct while providing delivery of superior claims service
Strong knowledge of computers and claims systems
Superior organizational and written and verbal communication skills
Superior investigative and problem-solving abilities
Occasional travel: a valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards is required if driving
The hiring salary range for this position will vary based on geographic location, falling within either of the following:
$130,955 - $188,175 or $144,758 - $206,984A hiring range represents a subset of the full salary range. The actual salary will depend on several factors, including relevant education, skills, and experience of an applicant, geographic location, and business needs.
