Mechanical Design Engineer – Engineer to Order (ETO)
Location: Edinboro, PA; Delaware, OH

From life-saving healthcare systems to high-performance computing, we design, manufacture, and service the products and solutions that keep the world connected. With over $8 billion in annual sales and operations in more than 130 countries, Vertiv is uniquely positioned to deliver greater value to our customers and create new opportunities for our people.
We are currently seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineer to Order (ETO) engineering team, supporting custom data center rack, enclosure, and infrastructure solutions tailored to specific customer requirements.
Position Summary
As an ETO Mechanical Design Engineer at Vertiv, you will be responsible for developing customized mechanical designs that meet unique customer, site, and application requirements. This role requires strong technical judgment, customer focus, and the ability to work independently with limited supervision in a fast-paced, order-driven environment.
You will collaborate closely with sales, applications engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams to translate customer requirements into manufacturable, compliant, and cost-effective engineered solutions. This T11-level role is intended for an engineer who can take broader ownership of moderately complex customer projects, guide design decisions, and serve as a strong technical resource within the ETO workflow without being positioned as a senior-level role.
Responsibilities
- Develop and release custom mechanical designs in response to customer-specific requirements within an Engineer-to-Order environment.
- Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and production drawings using Autodesk Inventor, with secondary support using PTC Creo.
- Own moderately complex ETO assignments from requirements clarification through design release, balancing customer needs, manufacturability, cost, schedule, and compliance.
- Work directly with sales, applications, and customers to clarify requirements, resolve technical questions, and align expectations early in the order lifecycle.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable standards, regulations, and internal design guidelines.
- Coordinate with manufacturing engineering, suppliers, and operations to ensure designs are manufacturable and meet delivery commitments.
- Support quotation, order execution, and change management activities throughout the order lifecycle.
- Create and maintain BOMs, drawings, and engineering change documentation in ERP and PLM systems.
- Resolve design and manufacturing issues independently, apply structured problem-solving where appropriate, and capture lessons learned to improve future orders.
- Provide practical technical guidance to less-experienced engineers or designers on ETO design practices, drawing quality, and manufacturability.
- Contribute to standardization, reuse of proven designs, and continuous improvement efforts that reduce ETO lead time and improve execution quality.
- Balance speed, accuracy, and quality in a high-mix, customer-driven environment.
Qualifications Minimum Requirements:
- Associate degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent work experience.
- 10-12 years of mechanical engineering experience, preferred focus in sheet metal design, custom engineer-to-order products, or manufacturing-focused environments.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling; Autodesk Inventor required, Creo preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with limited supervision and make sound engineering decisions on moderately complex assignments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including direct interaction with sales, applications engineering, manufacturing, and customers.
- Working understanding of BOMs, production drawings, engineering change documentation, and release processes in ERP or PLM systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
- Experience designing sheet metal enclosures and assemblies for customer-specific applications.
- Working knowledge of laser cutting, punch press, press brake, welding, and powder coating processes.
- Experience working in formal Engineer-to-Order environments supporting sales and order execution.
- Experience with ERP systems such as Oracle PD Cloud or Microsoft Dynamics.
- Experience with PLM tools such as Autodesk Vault, Windchill, or Agile.
- Familiarity with data center, ICT, or technology infrastructure equipment.
- Experience with automation or rule-based tools such as iLogic, VB.NET, Python, C#, or C++.
- Understanding of applicable regulatory, compliance, and industry standards.
- Experience identifying opportunities for design reuse, standardization, cost reduction, or process improvement within custom engineering work.
What Will Make You Successful?
- Strong ownership and accountability for customer orders and design quality.
- Ability to make sound engineering decisions under schedule pressure and escalate appropriately when risk or scope requires it.
- Customer-focused mindset balanced with manufacturability, cost control, and compliance discipline.
- Comfort managing multiple orders and priorities simultaneously while maintaining clear communication with stakeholders.
- Ability to guide peers or less-experienced engineers without needing formal supervisory responsibility.
- Continuous improvement mindset and attention to detail.
