A Day in the Life

As an Operating Theatre Technical Consultant, you will provide in-OR, hybrid theatre and Cath Lab case support for Medtronic technologies across the Free State and Northern Cape territory. The main product focus will be Spine, Aortic, Peripheral Vascular Health and TruClear, with emphasis on open spine procedures, spinal implant cases, powered surgical instruments, EVAR, TEVAR, peripheral vascular interventions and TruClear hysteroscopic tissue removal procedures. The role will also provide backup support to Cath Lab and OR Specialist Technical Consultants when required. For this position, you are expected to be based in Bloemfontein or Kimberly and support customers across the Free State and Northern Cape, South Africa.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned: 

  • Support revenue, adoption and market share growth across Spine, Aortic, Peripheral Vascular Health and TruClear, with primary focus on open spine procedures
  • Deliver on-site customer education, in-servicing and procedure support while building strong relationships with surgeons, theatre teams and hospital stakeholders
  • Provide technical support through product demos, case preparation, system setup, troubleshooting, workflow guidance and post-case follow-up
  • Support cases across open spine, spinal implants, powered instruments, EVAR, TEVAR, peripheral vascular interventions and TruClear procedures
  • Ensure procedure bookings, equipment readiness, product availability, theatre/Cath Lab access and resource coordination for case coverage
  • Partner with Sales, Marketing and specialist TCs to support evaluations, conversions, training, adoption and backup case support
  • Maintain strong product and procedural knowledge and provide non-clinical technical support only, without clinical judgement or patient management
  • Manage field inventory through stock monitoring, cycle counts and return of expiring products before expiry
  • Complete weekly CRM/SFDC reporting and perform all activities in line with Medtronic quality, regulatory, hospital, safety and EHS requirements, with around 60% travel across the Free State and Northern Cape. 

Required Knowledge and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Life Sciences, Biomedical Science/Engineering or a related field
  • 2+ years’ experience in the medical device or hospital environment, ideally in theatre, hybrid theatre, Cath Lab or procedure-support roles
  • Strong understanding of OR, hybrid theatre and Cath Lab workflows, including sterile field principles, equipment setup and troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with hospital and theatre requirements such as sterilization, infection prevention, radiation safety, theatre etiquette and case readiness
  • Hands-on, customer-focused communicator with strong planning, coordination and problem-solving skills, and English proficiency at B2 level or above.
