Group Research and Development (GRD) performs strategic and applied research for DNV, focusing on knowledge development through collaborations with academia and industry, providing thought leadership through external publications and forecasts, and creating scientific legitimacy for DNV services. 

A major focus for GRD is shaping the future of AI assurance. The AI Assurance research program focuses on both developing AI for assurance and assurance of AI, building expertise across AI, digital transformation, risk, and assurance science. The program is organized into several teams across multiple locations. 

Would you like to work on advancing assurance methods for embodied AI? 

We are seeking an AI researcher to join our newly established AI Research Center in Oakland/Berkeley. In this role, you will contribute directly to activities aimed at improving the safety and reliability of embodied AI systems – intelligent systems that interact with the physical world, such as robots, drones, and autonomous vehicles.

This position is based at DNV’s Oakland, CA office and will initially be located on the UC Berkeley campus. Additional role-specific requirements will be discussed during the interview process.

  • Contribute to ongoing research projects and help define new research directions 

  • Engage with universities to maintain and strengthen ongoing and future research collaborations
  • Develop internal prototypes to test and evaluate methods relevant to embodied AI assurance 
  • Publish scientific results and attend conferences to build new knowledge and share DNV’s work

DNV provides a reasonable range of compensation for this role. The actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors, including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific location. For the states of California, Washington, New York, Washington, D.C., Illinois, and Maryland only, the starting pay range for this role is $75,000 - $155,000.

What is Required

 

  • Bachelors in AI, physics, mathematics/statistics, or computer science (or relevant, similar education) is required
  • Proven experience in machine learning model development and digital tool implementation. 
  • Excellent presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills 
  • We conduct pre-employment drug and background screening

 

What is Preferred

 

  • Master’s or PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • Strong understanding of AI technologies and assurance principles.

  • Research experience in robotics, control systems, deep learning, or other fields related to embodied AI safety.
