The Business Data team is a cross-functional group of data practitioners including Technology Platforms, Data Engineering, Data Science, and Scaled Insights. Our team is at the forefront of this strategy, developing innovative products and building the industry data platform of the future to power both internal and external use cases.About the role
As the Director of Data Engineering, you will lead a growing data engineering function within the Business Data organization. You will lead a team of engineers to build a modern data platform at the speed of the business, enabling the team to scale effectively across Industry Professional projects. This role sits at the intersection of Product, Engineering, and GTM, building the infrastructure and insights to support Zillow’s next phase of growth.
Responsibilities
Lead and grow a team of data engineers, providing mentorship and leadership within the function.
Build the future of the data engineering practice to deliver value to internal and external stakeholders while leveraging cutting edge technologies to dramatically accelerate quality, scale, and depth of delivery.
Design and implement scalable data pipelines to collect, process, and store large volumes of critical data from various sources.
Drive the evolution of the Business Data platform by leveraging modern data technologies like Spark, Airflow, and Databricks.
Collaborate across organizational boundaries with Product, Marketing, and Sales to convert business needs into technical requirements.
Authoritatively translate business use cases into well-thought-out data models that evolve with the business.
Who you are
You are a seasoned engineering leader ready to bring your expertise to transform the real estate industry. You have an appreciation for the unique challenges of B2B product development and a passion for building high-quality, scalable data applications.
Qualifications:
A degree (BS+) in Computer Science or a related field.
15+ years of work experience involving quantitative data analysis and complex problem solving. Experience working with product and GTM teams strongly preferred.
5+ years leading Data Engineering teams.
Extensive experience building and maintaining data-intensive applications and sophisticated data pipelines.
Strong proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or Scala, and expert-level SQL.
Proven experience in data modeling and working with cloud services (AWS/Azure/GCP) and leveraging AI to rethink Data Engineering delivery.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
