The Mission of the Staff Mechanical Engineer

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Staff Engineer to join our engineering team based at our office in Valencia, Spain.

ICEYE is building and operating its commercial constellation of small Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites with SAR data available to customers.

Responsibilities:

As the Mechanical Staff Engineer you are responsible for developing our next generation satellite structures, deployable mechanisms and related hardware. You are a professional team player who will communicate and collaborate effortlessly with our other engineering teams to achieve common goals. Responsibilities include:

  • Manufacturing Collaboration: Working directly with manufacturers to optimize designs for manufacturability

  • Problem-Solving: Overcome significant design challenges and taking projects from start to finish successfully

  • Design complex mechanical systems, including deployable mechanisms

  • Balance quick and efficient design with a process-oriented approach

  • Excellent Communication: Interfaces with directors, team leads, project managers, and stakeholders; adept at technical conflict resolution and guiding technical teams

  • Process and Cost Awareness: Knowledgeable about the impact of design choices on manufacturing costs, time, and weight

  • Familiarity with Manufacturing Machinery: Understands advantages and drawbacks of machinery and modifies processes for success

Requirements

Basic Qualifications

  • 15+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical design engineering, with a strong specialization in satellite or broader aerospace hardware — this is a practitioner role built on deep industry experience, not a management-track position.

  • Ability to perform hand calculations for fast concept implementation and simple design creation

  • Experience creating complex mechanical structures, taking into account thermal, electronic, RF, and manufacturing considerations

  • CAD Fluency: Proficient in CAD tools like Inventor and SolidWorks

  • Experience with projects from proof of concept to delivery

Nice to have skills

  • Experience working as a mechanical architect.

  • Spacecraft system-level knowledge.

  • Proven experience with satellite structures and validating mechanical platforms for launch.

  • Proficiency in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools, with strong design intuition to minimize unnecessary iterations.

  • End-to-end mechanical design experience from concept to maintenance, with particular strength in the concept and design phases for both composite and metallic structures.

  • Deep understanding of manufacturing processes for metallic and composite materials, including CFRP.

  • Familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
