Job Role: Part-Time Draftsperson & Quoting Assistant

Compensation range: $800 AUD - $1,400 AUD / Monthly

Engagement type: Independent Contractor Agreement

Work Schedule: This role is expected to require roughly 20 hours per week. As a contractor, you’ll have flexibility in how you manage your schedule, but availability for occasional collaboration during AU business hours is preferred.

Who The Client Is: This Australian business specialises in custom joinery and cabinetry for residential and commercial projects. With a strong focus on quality workmanship and practical design, the team delivers tailored solutions to suit each client's requirements. The business is led by a hands-on owner who works closely with the team to ensure projects are completed to a high standard.

Role Overview: This is a part-time role (approximately 20 hours per week) supporting the owner with estimating, quoting, drafting, and general project administration. You will be responsible for turning architectural and hand-drawn sketches into SketchUp drawings, preparing quotes using established spreadsheet templates, and helping track job progress across active projects. There is potential for this role to grow into a full-time position as the business continues to scale.

Key Responsibilities: 

Estimating & Quoting

  • Review architectural drawings and hand sketches to extract measurements, materials, and specifications for quoting purposes
  • Use the company's Excel spreadsheet templates to calculate and compile accurate project estimates
  • Transfer completed estimates into formal quote documents for client submission
  • Research and verify material costs and supplier pricing as needed

Drafting & Drawing

  • Create SketchUp drawings from rough hand sketches and reference documents, producing submission-quality visuals for quoting
  • Prepare clean, presentation-ready drawings that clearly communicate project scope to clients and suppliers

Project Tracking & Administration

  • Maintain and update a shared job tracking spreadsheet with weekly progress across all active projects (e.g. sent to machine, installed, completed)
  • Organise and manage project files and documents via Dropbox
  • Download appliance details from supplier invoices and accurately save and organise files for project records
  • Assist with general administrative tasks and paperwork as the business requires

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in estimating, quoting, drafting, or a related support role within joinery, cabinetmaking, construction, or fit-out industries
  • Strong proficiency in SketchUp for creating drawings from hand sketches and reference materials
  • Advanced Excel skills, including working with formulas, templates, and spreadsheet-based estimating tools
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
  • Highly organised with strong attention to detail, particularly when working with measurements and costings
  • Comfortable working independently and managing your own schedule within agreed timeframes
  • Proficiency with AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude) to improve productivity and workflow efficiency

Preferred/Nice-to-Have:

  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar CAD software
  • Familiarity with Australian construction or joinery standards and terminology
  • Previous experience working remotely with Australian clients or businesses
  • Experience using Dropbox or similar cloud-based file management platforms

Work Arrangement & Expectations:

This is a remote role that may be set up as either an independent contractor engagement or via an Employer of Record (EOR), depending on client preferences and legal structure.

To ensure alignment and transparency, successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Be available for meetings and collaboration during core [AEST or PHT] business hours
  • Disclose any existing ongoing roles or client work
  • Reflect this engagement on their LinkedIn profile (clearly marked as “Independent Contractor” if not employed via EOR)
