Staff Product Marketing Manager
Category-defining tech. Career-defining work.
Lots of tech companies disrupt. But, many fail when they try to scale. We're different. CockroachDB makes it easier for companies to build and scale apps. This is how and why we're helping some of the most innovative companies on the planet. We tackle problems head-on and focus on solutions that create lasting impact.
Because when our customers win, we all win.
The Role
We're looking for a Staff Product Marketing Manager to join our PMM team during a pivotal period of growth. This is a high-ownership role at the center of everything Cockroach Labs does: you'll own the go-to-market for a defined portfolio of product areas, serve as the go-to-market lead for our company rebrand — the biggest brand moment in our history — and act as a launch bench across one of the densest release calendars we've ever shipped, including major GA milestones across editions, deployment, and operations.
Your product portfolio anchors one of our most strategic stories — how CockroachDB runs, watches, and connects itself in production: Observability & AI-Assisted Insights (including our new autonomous monitoring agent), Workload Management, and Ecosystem & Platform Integration (change data capture and how CockroachDB plugs into the modern data stack). Together these areas sit at the heart of CockroachDB's AI-operations narrative and its “fits your stack” story, and you'll shape how the market understands them.
Product Marketing at Cockroach Labs sits inside the Product organization within R&D, which means you're embedded in the product development lifecycle from the start: you'll attend product planning, know the roadmap two quarters out, and author the “so what” for every feature that ships in your areas. If you like working with R&D in the morning, Demand Generation mid-day, and Sales in the afternoon, we'd love to hear from you.
You Will Own
- Positioning and messaging for your portfolio. Develop, test, and deliver compelling positioning and value propositions for your product areas, tuned to the needs of key personas — developers, platform engineers, architects, and enterprise buyers. The core skill of this role is translation: taking complex technical capabilities and expressing them in language a CIO acts on.
- Rebrand go-to-market. Lead the cross-functional go-to-market program for the company rebrand: narrative, messaging migration, launch sequencing, field and customer communications, and enablement — coordinating across Product, Marketing, Sales, and Comms to land it on time and with impact.
- Product launches and releases. Drive launch-grade execution for the releases in your areas and serve as a shared launch bench for marquee GA moments across the roadmap. Help install and run a standardized launch playbook used for every product release.
- Content and bill of materials. Create high-impact collateral — product briefs, website copy, blogs, whitepapers, case studies, and sales assets — that communicates real customer value, not feature lists.
- Sales enablement. Build training and enablement that Sales actually uses: where we win by vertical, use case, and persona; how to tell the cost and resilience story against Aurora, Oracle, and Spanner; and how to sell in business language rather than database terms.
- Market and competitive intelligence. Analyze industry trends, customer needs, and the competitive landscape. Feed win/loss insight, product analytics, and field feedback back into positioning, roadmap conversations, and enablement priorities.
- Cross-functional GTM collaboration. Operate as a trusted partner to Product Management, Education, Demand Generation, and Sales. Influence outcomes across teams you don't own, and build joint deliverables that make the whole go-to-market stronger.
The Expectations
- In your first 30 days, you'll go deep on the product (create clusters, run workloads), your journeys, and our go-to-market strategy. You'll build relationships with the PMs and engineering leaders behind your areas, audit the existing positioning and content, and get hands-on with the rebrand program plan.
- By 60 days, you'll have refined messaging for your portfolio, taken ownership of the rebrand go-to-market workstream, and built the launch plan for the next release cycle in your areas. You'll complete 200-level Cockroach University courses.
- By 90 days, you'll be executing in full: launches shipping on your playbook, rebrand milestones on track, enablement delivered to Sales, and an operating rhythm established with Product, Demand Generation, Content, and AR/PR.
You Have
- 8+ years of professional experience, including 5+ years in enterprise software/SaaS product marketing with a proven record of launching products to market (we're hiring at the Senior or Staff level depending on experience)
- Enterprise infrastructure or developer-tools experience: you've marketed deeply technical products to developers, architects, and CTOs/CIOs, and you hold your own in the room with technical buyers — ideally with exposure to the database, data infrastructure, or AI categories
- Exceptional technical-to-business translation ability: you instinctively rewrite “geo-partitioned leaseholder rebalancing” as “your app is fast everywhere your customers are”
- Launch leadership: you've run complex, cross-functional launches end to end — and ideally a rebrand, repositioning, or category-level messaging change
- Strong writing chops: you produce unique, personable long-form content that technical audiences actually want to read
- Analytical rigor: you use win/loss analysis, product analytics, and pipeline data to inform strategy, prove what's working, and kill what isn't
- The ability to thoughtfully use LLMs to radically improve PMM effectiveness
- A track record of operating cross-functionally with product, engineering, and sales as a trusted advisor — navigating ambiguity, integrating diverse perspectives, and driving measurable results without direct ownership of every outcome
Nice to Have
- Experience marketing against cloud-native default databases (Aurora, DynamoDB, Spanner) and overcoming “good enough + already on AWS” inertia
- Experience positioning observability, AIOps, or AI-assisted products
- Familiarity with data integration and streaming ecosystems (change data capture, Kafka, schema registries) and how enterprises evaluate “fits my stack”
- Experience building or running competitive intelligence programs (battlecards, win/loss cadences, sales feedback loops)
The Team
