Role and Team Overview

As a College Sports Systems Technician with Hawk-Eye, you'll be instrumental in ensuring seamless technology operations during live games across various sports (Women’s Soccer, Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, and Softball). Key Responsibilities

  • System Quality Control: Ensure the quality of replay systems for all contracted sports, including Women’s Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Baseball, and Softball.

  • Pre-Match Readiness: Conduct pre-match checks of systems to ensure smooth operation prior to the start of every game.

  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Effectively collaborate with system operators, officials, Birmingham staff, school production staff, and broadcasters both on-site and remotely.

  • Live Game Monitoring: Monitor and maintain technology during games to ensure optimal performance when it matters most.

  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintain hardware and equipment throughout the season, with possible off-season work for ongoing maintenance.

  • Installation & Deployment: Assist with the installation and testing of new products and services on-site.

What Does A Typical Day Look Like?

During the Season (August – May)

  • Arrive on-site at least 2 hours prior to game time.

  • Follow pre-game checklist items to ensure full system functionality before the replay operator arrives.

  • Flag and troubleshoot any issues identified during pre-game checks.

  • Communicate with the Birmingham supervisor on pre-game check progress.

  • Coordinate broadcast camera plans with appropriate broadcast personnel to ensure we are ingesting all available angles.

  • Ensure officials, event managers, replay operators, and Birmingham staff are kept up-to-date on operational readiness.

  • Be available and prepared during the game for any operational assistance required.

  • Follow the post-game checklist and ensure all equipment is properly secured and ready for the next event.

Off-Season (May – August)

  • Complete recertification of systems as required for preseason checks.

  • Communicate any issues to the Birmingham staff that need to be addressed or resolved prior to the next season.

What Challenges Might I Face?

While there are many exciting aspects to this role, it's important to understand the unique challenges you may encounter:

  • Working Hours: Due to the nature of the sports industry, work frequently occurs on weekends and midweek evenings. You will be expected to fulfill your role until the final whistle blows and equipment takedown is complete.

  • Technical Troubleshooting: As the primary on-site contact for Hawk-Eye, you will be responsible for the functionality of the local hardware. While you will have remote support from our Birmingham staff and local school contacts, you will be relied upon to resolve hardware issues in a timely manner, which can occasionally involve high-pressure moments.
