Director, SAP AFPA Platform Lead

WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?
Global Functions Technology (GFT) is a division within RBC’s Technology and Operations group, dedicated to supporting a wide range of business partners, including Risk, Finance, Human Resources (HR), Chief Administrative Office (CAO), Audit, Legal, Compliance, Financial Crime, Capital Markets, Personal and Commercial Banking, and Wealth Management. Within GFT, Finance IT operates as a global technology delivery function with a workforce of over 900 professionals worldwide. This team is responsible for managing and maintaining more than 100 production applications that provide critical support to RBC’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) group.
The SAP Accounts Payable and Fixed Assets (APFA) Platform Lead will be responsible for leading the design, configuration, and rollout of SAP APFA platform for the bank. In addition to being a hands-on functional expert, the SAP APFA Development Lead will manage ERP configuration squads and own the technical setup of the SAP platform — including any required custom development, reports, workflows, and related enhancements.
WHAT WILL YOU DO?
Configuration & Design Leadership
- Own the activities for the rollout SAP APFA modules
- Translate business and accounting requirements into detailed SAP configurations, ensuring adherence to the global design template.
- Configure chart of accounts, posting rules, event models, and reporting structures to support multi-entity, multi-GAAP requirements. Define the Reporting framework.
- Validate functional configurations through prototyping, testing, and iterative feedback with business teams.
- Own the technical setup of the SAP platform, ensuring it is aligned with enterprise design and scalable for future rollouts. Oversee and guide any custom development, extensions, or platform enhancements.
- Define and implement SAP workflows and approvals to support end-to-end finance processes. Ensure all configuration and technical setup adhere to global design standards, SAP governance frameworks, enterprise architecture, security, and regulatory standards.
- Maintain detailed documentation of configuration decisions, custom development, and test evidence. Incorporate lessons learned from each entity rollout into configuration and setup playbooks.
Leadership and Team Management;
- Manage SAP configuration squads (functional consultants and analysts) across multiple entities.
- Assign tasks, set delivery milestones, and monitor squad performance to ensure timely, high-quality outputs.
- Mentor and coach squad members, fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement. Ensure squads are aligned with overall SAP Finance program objectives and global design standards.
- Fosters high achievement environments where diversity is valued, and people are treated with respect and dignity. Partner with the SAP Architect and Global SAP Lead to ensure alignment between functional design and technical solution.
- Collaborate with data sourcing and integration teams to ensure SAP configuration supports upstream and downstream system interfaces. Work with Reporting & Analytics teams to ensure reporting requirements are supported by SAP configuration choices.
- Support Data Migration teams to validate data mapping, reconciliation, and trial balance validation in the configured system.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?
MUST HAVE:
- 8+ years of configuration and platform setup experience in large-scale Finance ERP implementations, ideally within financial services.
- Deep functional expertise in Accounts Payable and Fixed Assets for large global banks.
- Strong understanding of financial accounting principles (multi-GAAP, consolidations, reconciliations).
- Demonstrated experience managing SAP configuration squads and overseeing technical setup/custom development.
- Hands-on experience with SAP reports, workflows, and platform customization. Experience working with integration, reporting, and data migration teams on SAP programs.

- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with ability to translate business needs into SAP solutions.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, influencing senior executives and building relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead geographically dispersed teams of consultants, developers, and integration specialists in global financial services environments.
- Knowledge of architecture aspects (business, data, cyber security), SDLC lifecycle, Agile methodologies, and prior experience working with global/distributed teams.
- Holds undergraduate and/or post-graduate degree (preferably in Business or Finance)
