Responsibilities

In this role the Laboratory Prep Technician will perform the following duties:

  • Contribute to the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients by preparing and/or processing a variety of specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Maintain positive patient identification throughout the specimen preparation and processing workflow.
  • Retrieve and verify patient specimens to ensure accuracy and integrity.
  • Track and manage specimens received without a requisition.
  • Accession wet tissue specimens, outside/consultation materials, and cytology specimens.
  • Compile work logs and print pathology slides.
  • Perform slide cover slipping and related slide preparation activities.
  • Distribute pathology cases to the appropriate personnel.
  • File, retrieve, and maintain pathology blocks and slides.
  • Perform routine maintenance of tissue processors and other laboratory equipment.
  • Handle chemical hazardous waste removal in accordance with safety and regulatory guidelines.
  • Distill laboratory chemicals as required.
  • Maintain laboratory records and ensure proper record retention.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory work areas to ensure a safe and organized environment.
  • Dispose of stored patient tissues according to established policies and procedures.
  • Process and coordinate stain requests.
  • Answer telephone inquiries and provide professional customer service.
  • Utilize and maintain knowledge of the Pathology Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Perform all duties with accuracy, professionalism, and ethical standards.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and demonstrate trustworthiness in handling patient information.
  • Communicate effectively and interact professionally with patients, providers, and coworkers, including in stressful situations.
  • Safely handle chemicals, reagents, and hazardous waste materials while following all applicable safety protocols.

Schedule

FTE: 1.0

Hours: 7:00am-3:30pm

Days: Monday-Friday

Qualifications

Education

Required: High School Diploma or GED with specific course work in vocational training

Preferred: Specific course work in phlebotomy, medical terminology and data entry

 

Necessary Skills

  • Data Entry
  • Good communication skills with internal and external laboratory customers and associates through verbal and electronic communication
  • Knowledge of laboratory departments, specimen types, equipment and processing
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and organize work flow. Requires good decision-making skills
  • Must be detailed oriented. 6. Must be able to resolve stressful situations in a professional manner

Experience

Required: 1-2 years Data entry or Lab experience

Preferred: Specimen processing and test preparation in microbiology, histology or cytology
