Senior Energy Storage Consultant
The Senior Energy Storage Consultant – Safety & Compliance will lead and deliver technical advisory, safety engineering, and compliance review services for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across China, with opportunities to support projects throughout APAC. The role focuses on evaluating BESS products and projects against international safety standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices, supporting manufacturers, developers, investors, insurers, and financial institutions in understanding and managing technology and safety risks.
The position plays a key role in DNV's growing portfolio of BESS technology review, safety assessment, compliance verification, and technical due diligence services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead safety and compliance reviews of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including battery cells, modules, racks, containers, and associated auxiliary systems.
- Assess compliance with applicable international and regional standards, codes, and regulations, including UL, IEC, NFPA, GB standards and fire codes.
- Review product certifications, test reports, and supporting evidence, including UL 1973, UL 9540, UL 9540A, IEC 62619, IEC 62933, UN 38.3, NFPA 855, NFPA 68, NFPA 69, and related standards.
- Evaluate thermal runaway behavior, fire and explosion hazards, fire protection systems, thermal runaway propagation protection (TRPP) measures, gas detection systems, ventilation strategies, and explosion mitigation concepts.
- Review hazard assessments and safety engineering studies, including Hazard Mitigation Analysis (HMA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), fire risk assessments, fire modelling, CFD studies, and deflagration analyses.
- Support Owner's Engineering, Technical Due Diligence (TDD), Independent Engineering, and Lender's Technical Advisory engagements with a focus on product safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
- Monitor developments in international standards, industry practices, and regulatory requirements related to energy storage safety and communicate key implications to clients and internal teams.
- Participate in or lead factory inspections, manufacturing audits, and product safety assessments at battery, PCS, and BESS manufacturing facilities.
- Support business development, proposal preparation, client presentations, and technical discussions related to BESS technology review, safety, compliance, and risk management services.

- Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, Energy Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Safety Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 5–18 years of experience in battery energy storage, renewable energy, fire protection, product safety, certification, regulatory compliance, or related engineering fields.
- Strong understanding of lithium-ion battery technologies and associated safety risks, including thermal runaway, fire propagation, gas hazards, and explosion protection.
- Practical experience with international safety standards and certification frameworks applicable to BESS, such as UL 9540A, UL 9540, UL 1973, NFPA 855, NFPA 68, NFPA 69, IEC 62619, IEC 62933, and relevant GB standards.
- Experience reviewing certification packages, test reports, compliance documentation, and safety engineering studies.
- Familiarity with fire protection systems, fire detection and suppression systems, gaseous suppression technologies, ventilation systems, and explosion mitigation measures.
- Experience performing or reviewing safety analyses such as HMA, FMEA, fire risk assessments, hazard analyses, CFD simulations, or related studies.
- Experience working in certification bodies and engineering consultancies is a plus.
- Strong analytical and technical writing skills, with the ability to prepare clear, independent, and evidence-based assessments and recommendations.
- Comfortable working in a client-facing consulting environment and engaging with senior technical stakeholders.
- Native or fluent Mandarin and professional-level English.
- Willing to travel within China and occasionally across APAC.
