Job Summary

Based in Singapore, the Senior LNG Trader will be a part of our dynamic LNG trading team at ConocoPhillips. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make a significant impact by managing physical LNG trading activities, refining trading strategies, and enhancing profitability, all while adhering to regulatory requirements and company policies.

Position Overview

Key responsibilities

  • Collaboratively devise and implement trading strategies to leverage market opportunities and manage risk efficiently, from immediate to mid-term scenarios. Initiate and carry out physical LNG trades in global markets, aligning with these strategies. We encourage diverse perspectives and innovative approaches to enhance our trading performance.
  • Drive the establishment and nurturing of strategic trading relationships with a diverse array of counterparties, fostering potential for enduring partnerships.
  • Play a key role in dissecting market trends, supply-demand dynamics, and geopolitical factors to shape informed and effective trading decisions.
  • Actively shape the evolution of our trading strategy by infusing it with your unique insights, thorough analysis, and strategic recommendations based on a deep understanding of market trends and dynamics.
  • Drive the negotiation of contracts, terms, and pricing structures to secure advantageous trade agreements, including Master Sale and Purchase Agreements (MSPAs) and other contractual arrangements.
  • Work hand-in-hand with Optimisation and Operations teams to amplify the value of deals from inception to delivery, ensuring efficient execution and delivery of physical LNG trades.
  • Lead coordination with the Chartering team regarding charter agreements, optimizing vessel utilization, and managing shipping logistics.
  • Provide critical support to the Origination team in long-term contract negotiations by offering market insights, analysis, and expertise in structuring beneficial agreements.
  • Engage with internal teams, including risk management, operations, legal, and finance, to ensure flawless trade execution and settlement.
  • Create a collaborative and inclusive team environment, championing knowledge-sharing and professional development opportunities. Provide leadership and guidance to the wider trading team and analysts, mentoring them in trading strategies, risk management techniques, and market analysis.

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in finance, economics, engineering, math or related field, or foreign equivalent.
  • 7+ years of experience in physical LNG trading/structuring.
  • Advanced level of knowledge of LNG supply chains, shipping logistics, and pricing mechanisms.

Preferred Skills and Experiences

  • A demonstrated history of success in global markets, showcasing your ability to navigate and excel in diverse trading environments.
  • Valuable experience in the establishment or expansion of new LNG desks, highlighting your adaptability and pioneering spirit.
  • Robust understanding of hedging techniques and financial instruments (both linear and options), reflecting your ability to manage trading risks and optimize portfolio performance effectively.
  • Proven experience in negotiating complex contracts, including MSPAs and other trade agreements, with a strong track record of driving favourable outcomes for the organization.
  • Proficiency in trading platforms (WebICE, Trayport etc.), market analysis tools, and risk management systems, demonstrating your technical acumen and strategic thinking.
  • Exceptional negotiation and communication skills, underlining your ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and foster collaborative partnerships.
  • Resilience and adaptability in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, with the ability to make sound decisions under uncertainty, showcasing your leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements in global energy markets, reflecting your commitment to integrity and ethical business practices.
  • Takes ownership of actions and follows through on commitments by holding others accountable and standing up for what is right.
  • Delivers positive results through realistic planning to accomplish goals.
