The Opportunity

This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL location within the GES Global Engineering Services division.

The Grounds Keeper is responsible for maintaining the exterior appearance, safety, and functionality of Abbott Lake County sites. Reporting to the Grounds Manager, this position performs a variety of ground maintenance activities including landscape and hardscape maintenance, outdoor pest control, trash and waste management, winter weather response, and support of outdoor events. The Grounds Keeper helps ensure the campus reflects Abbott's commitment to safety, quality, and a world-class employee and visitor experience.

What You'll Work On:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain lawns, trees, shrubs, flowerbeds, native areas, athletic fields, and other landscaped areas through mowing, trimming, pruning, planting, watering, fertilizing, and weed control.
  • Maintain and repair hardscape features including sidewalks, curbs, parking lots, roads, retaining walls, site furnishings, fencing, and outdoor gathering areas.
  • Support site pest management programs through monitoring, application, and documentation activities in accordance with applicable regulations and company procedures.
  • Collect, transport, and manage outdoor trash, recycling, and waste materials to maintain a clean and professional campus environment.
  • Operate snow removal equipment and perform winter weather response services including plowing, salting, shoveling, de-icing, and monitoring site conditions.
  • Operate, inspect, clean, and perform basic maintenance on grounds equipment, vehicles, tractors, mowers, sprayers, and related tools.
  • Support preparation and teardown activities for outdoor meetings, employee events, community activities, and other site functions.
  • Assist with installation, repair, and movement of outdoor equipment, signage, barricades, benches, and other site assets.
  • Identify and report safety concerns, equipment issues, and landscape or infrastructure deficiencies.
  • Maintain accurate records as required for pesticide applications, equipment inspections, and other regulatory or operational activities.
  • Follow all Abbott safety, environmental, quality, and operational procedures.
  • Support emergency response, weather-related operations, and special projects as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the scope of the position.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Illinois pesticide license within 12 months of hire.
  • Ability to safely operate grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Ability to frequently lift, push, pull, and carry up to 70 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
  • Practical and demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to safety.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, hardscape maintenance, snow removal, outdoor pest control, or related fields.
  • Experience operating commercial landscaping or snow removal equipment.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience performing basic equipment repairs.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain one.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English skills.

The base pay for this position is $18.30 – $36.60 per hour. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
